I am so relieve to find this forum. I just finished building a house, and having been in TV stations for 25+ years, I feel faily confident in the technical area. Full Disclosure> I am not an engineer, but I have picked up a great deal of practical knowledge over the years, and I am very greatful to have worked with some of the most brillient engineers in the world.

That said, I decided to act as contractor on this house and also planned and ran all of the low voltage wiriing. I was fortnate to have an excellent place in the basement to serve as a tech room which is adjacent to my 7.1 media room. I now have a room full, and I mean full of raw cat 5, video and audio cable. Yes it is time to finish the job and terminate all of the sources. When I ran all the wire and cable, I rand Cat 5 and video and data to each room. Some rooms I ran multiple sets.

I had decided to simply move the stellite service to the new house as it is about 200 feet from the old house. At the time, I also decided to stay SD until they started with the huge discounted promotions etc. I have told this whole deal to ask a simple question about which muliswitch to use to distribute the satellie signal. I plan to sell the house but I do want to get the signal to all of the bedrooms and a few other locations, including one DVR receiver which requires 2 feeds. the DirecTV guy was a joke. He piggybacked 2 basic swithches and left me with 4 receivers sitting on the floor... all working, but not attached to a TV. I'm thinking I need a 4x8 or so. Any suggestions and or comments on the set-up would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks... and sorry for the length of the post, which is my first by the way.

Your post is detailed but extremely lacking on what you need help with. If you have 8 or less tuners (dvr is 2) then your fine with the piggyback. Judging by the "4 rec on the floor" you need 5 lines run which again your fine. So still not sure what you need hep with.

How many cable wires do you have that need to be connected to the Satellite? I would suggest a multiswitch depending on how many lines run.

I'm sorry but it seems the question got lost in the epic. I will learn to be more to the point. I was asking for a reccommendation for a multiswitch that has at least 8 out and I'm not sure how many inputs I need. Chances are the new owner, or maybe myself will upgrade to HD, which I would assume will be a Slimeline dish. That said, what switch would you buy.

:welcome to SatelliteGuys!!!!

What town in WNC are your in??

Are you assuming that the buyer of the home will want to subscribe to DIRECTV or do you know? There's not much point to setting it all up if they want to go in a different direction.

Also, make sure you have some suitable RG6 cable in the new house as CAT5 won't get the job done.

Multiswitch

I will definitely be buying a multiswitch. re there any compatibility issues with certain switches with Directv? I was thinking 8 out, but given I may end up feeding other video to my office/edit suite, I may need more outputs. Also I may upgrade to HD so when I sell this place, it will look better to the buyer. I had seen a "Spaun" product that indicated it was compatible with the DIRCTV gear, but would welcome any suggestions on a specific brand/model also wondering if I need any additional amplification on the longer runs.

Thanks again,

FYI... I was not in anyway implying that Satellite installers were a joke, this guy simply did not like the job and it showed in the installation. Is this how new guys are generally welcomed...

Unless you have your eye on international programming, four RG6 lines from where you have the dish planned should be enough. The possibility of going over 8 tuners lets out using an SWM enabled dish.

DIRECTV will supply everything you need in terms of switchgear and dish(es) as you require it and they'll do it for free. Moving the old system is relatively pointless as DIRECTV will update your dish and multiswitch now.

So there is no confusion, are you selling the new house or the old house and is this setup for you or the buyer?

There are two possibilities for multiswitches: WB68 (stacked if necessary) or WB16. NONE of the Spaun switches support Ku/Ka for DIRECTV.

I thought the new D* HD dvr's only required 1 cable run (for 2 tuners)?
That depends on your dish and/or multiswitch setup. If you want to go beyond 8 tuners or already have "legacy" equipment, you're in trouble.

DISH Network has been doing single cable receivers for four or five years now but each receiver requires a home run to a switch.
