The New York Mets signed right fielder Ryan Church to a one-year, $2.8 million deal. Church hit .276 with 12 homers in 90 games. He was bothered for much of the season by concussion-related issues.

The Mets also reached agreement with reserve outfielder Angel Pagan on a $575,000 deal.

A pair of Mets remained in arbitration when players and teams exchanged figures Tuesday: Starting pitcher John Maine asked for $3 million, with the club offering $2.2 million, and reliever Pedro Feliciano requested $1.95 million, while New York proposed $1.35 million.

Church is a very good player. Works hard on his fielding and batting. Not fast as an outfielder but has a throwing arm. Hits with power and to all fields. The Mets were wise to re-sign Church
Feliciano is inconsistent. As far as I am concerned he is a mop up middle reliver at best.

I know it will never happen but as a Braves fan, I wish they would offer him a 3 year deal worth about 60 million. Him hitting right behind Chipper and in front of either Francoeur or McCann would be sweet.

I wonder if fans develope this much hatred toward team owners when they hold their city and state hostage for a new TAXPAYER PAYED stadium?!

He didn't sign his offer for less than he would have made through arbitration until he had a solo meeting with the Sox owner. Good advice Bora$!!

Dodger's should offer Manny (if they want him more than one year) a 2 year deal at 32M and see what happens, regardless he's going to get less than he would have in Boston.
LA would be stupid to offer anywhere near what they did earlier.

AND to give the player all the credit is the same. The players give litterally complete control in the process. The ONLY time they get involved is when there is mutliple offers at around the same amount of money or they get desperate and they tell them to just accept the deal. Manny is nowhere near desperate. He will more than likely STILL get at least 25 million.

The Red Sox picked up Brad Wilkerson for insurance.

I have never heard of anyone have successful back surgery. I like Mark, I hope he recovers completely and can play again.

Varitek could have gone for arbitration and signed a one year deal for about $10M. With Bora$' advice he declined that offer and ended up signing a deal that could potentially pay him $10M over two years.

I just read that it was an arthroscopic procedure, to remove a displaced disc fragment. So, I guess it could be classified as minor surgery, which of course is defined as surgery on someone else...

But virtually all of the top free agents seem unwilling to accept arbitration, which would tie them to their clubs on one-year, non-guaranteed contracts.

Varitek, 36, seems an ideal candidate to accept the Red Sox's offer — despite batting only .220 last season, he would receive an increase from his $9 million salary through the arbitration process.

Boras also represents Ramirez, who would stand to earn between $25 million and $30 million in arbitration.

I never blame the player for trying to make as much money as possible, if another company in my field offered me ten times what I'm making now, I would go.

I blame the owners for paying the players that much and it's not just the Yankees and Red Sox, in the NFL rookies get millions and they aren't even proven yet, basketball players get paid ridiculous amount of money.

Then you have the owners who don't pay, and there team suffers.

IMHO there should be a cap max and minimum in all sports, all rookies should make the league minimum and incentive clauses so they will perform, after two years the rookies still have to stay with there teams, but they can get better contracts depending on how well they did, like arbitration in baseball.

2:13pm: SI.com's Jon Heyman learned from Ned Colletti that the Dodgers do not have a "drop-dead date" on the Manny negotiations. Heyman says that Joe Torre prefers Bobby Abreu to Adam Dunn, in terms of a backup plan.
8:47am: Your daily dose of Manny Ramirez: Ken Rosenthal says the Dodgers' one-year, $25MM offer contained some deferred money, but Scott Boras didn't seem put off by that aspect of the offer. He still rejected it quickly though. Rosenthal says Boras is holding out for more years especially since players such as Rafael Furcal, Derek Lowe, and Raul Ibanez received at least three.
According to Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times, Dodgers GM Ned Colletti sent out a text message to reporters about his Wednesday talks with Boras:
Colletti wrote that the two sides restated their respective positions -- Ramirez has been asking for at least a four-year deal and the Dodgers are interested in something shorter. The sides agreed to maintain communication over the next few days.
Hernandez received a clarification from Boras, who expects Manny to be signed by the time Spring Training games begin (Feb. 25) rather than when camp begins (Feb. 14).
