I like that tradition. It provides a certain symetry to the seasons. The indoor sport ends and the outdoor sport begins on the same day. I think that the reason it does not happen that way every year is that Bud "Light" (Kenesaw Molehill) Selig has the schedule counted back so many weeks from Labor Day, rather than establishing in stone that this happens every year.

Teams, of course, are free to play day games on Openning Day, as the Reds and many others always do anyway.

I thought it used to be Detroit ...and they they even started having games at 1pm to beat the reds 2:15 start so the AL game was first and THEN the reds had the "traditional NL opener"

Actually, last year was the only year the two events didn't take place on the same day in quite a while...and that was only because of last year being a leap year and other considerations...
