No more Wrigley? Cubs ace asks for a new ballpark

They will not be building a new stadium solely because their mouthy pitcher wants a new one.
Someday I'd imagine Wrigley will be replaced, but like the article says, fans love historic Wrigley and it continues to draw record crowds. I'd rather see minor improvements and renovations and keep the original structure in place.

IF you ever saw that locker room for players...ok AT BEST. You could only do so much renovations. As much as I LOVE Wrigley, it may time for a new one. I have seen the inside of this place and it has been renovated a few times but is seriously run down from the inside. Do not let all the nice full stadiums fool you. The management have know for a long time that IF the weather is nice, it WILL pack the house....regardless WHAT the Cubs put on the field or WHO they are playing. The CURRENT ownership has done what they could, but it is time for new owners and I think the city is afraid new ownership might wanna tear it down. I have heard rumblings of a heavy push to institute it with the National Historic Society and officially make it a national landmark so it WON'T EVER get knocked down.

I grew up going to Fenway and I'm as sentimental as they come, BUT the time has come!
I've seen some of the newer ballparks in person, and of course have seen them all on TV.
I envy the Baltimores, Clevelands, San Franciscos, Pittsburghs (my personal favorite of the new wave of ballparks), etc. I want one of those in Boston- preferably on the waterfront.
No one can ever replace a Wrigley field, But it is one of the few Iconic things left in chicago that makes it chicago.
For instance the sears tower will now be known as the willis tower.. It wont be black but a silver color now.
U.S. Cellular field should has stayed comisky park. In fact they could have done a welcome to Comisky park presented by U.S Cellular feild.
Those are just a few things causing Chicago to loose its identity.

I'm still thinking about getting a ticket for the Indians/Cubs series in Wrigley this year. I've got to go see a game at that place before it's too late.
Same here. I was lucky enough to see several games at Yankee Stadium before it closed (I don't mind telling you I got chills everytime I was there. There was definitely an aura in that place).
I LOVE the view of the bridges beyond the centerfield fence. Very classy looking ballpark (ballpark being the operative word)! :up
There is no way you can compare the replacement of Three Rivers Stadium to replacing Wrigley Field! 
Three Rivers/Fulton County/Riverfront/Busch stadiums were all cookie-cutter stadiums that were barely tolerated, much less loved by the fans. (I still lament the loss of Crosley field to that concrete behemoth known as Riverfront) This is why when Pitssburgh, Atlanta, Cincinnati and St. Louis all demolished (or completely refurbished to make into a ball park) these cookie cutters few cared and some cheered! Though I like Great American Ball Park, it is still not a real "old" ball park and I have no real connection to the place.
But when you contemplate tearing down historic fields like Fenway or Wrigley fans will protest! They are old, run-down but they are a part of the fans' living souls! I am not a Cubs fan. But I go to at least a couple of games at Wrigley (even when the Reds aren't playing there) just because it's wrigley field. And I am still ANGRY they added light to the field! Really! There would be no reason for me to go to Chicago if that field is demolished in favor of a new stadium.
Baseball, unlike any other sport is deeply tied to nostalgia. There is an intrinsic value to being able to sit at a stadium where Babe Ruth played. Where some great history was made. Fans feel connected to the entire life of the game, not just the game they are watching that day. It's about the smells, the grit and the entire ambiance. No new park, no matter how "retro" can capture that.
I would hate to lose one of the last two remaining old ball parks for not other reason than to keep up with the Joneses.
You can gut the place and renovate. Get Bob Villa back with the This Old House crew and make some magic that way, but don't tear down a living piece of history because "it's old".

I have mixed feelings about the Cubs now. Growing up watching the Cubs on WGN I became a Fan. And I wish they would make it to the World Series. But look at what they did to Steve Bartman back in 2003. Anyone who blamed him is ignorant about baseball. The fans next to him didn't try to get out of the way . Bartman did what any fan would have done. He tried to catch the ball. And he wasn't thrown out of the park for interfering with the play.
Excuse me. Please don't build a new park until I have a chance to see the Tigers play the Cubs there in Wrigley Field. I haven't been there yet. It's on my list of sporting events I want to do before I die. Of course there is no list of sporting events I want to attend after I die.
