MLB commissioner Selig appears to be "considering" reinstatement for Pete Rose

Because, you might play players, or make substitutions, in that particular game that you might not make otherwise.
You might bring in a hot pitcher that is normally scheduled for the next game.
Or sandbag the prior games to increase the odds in the game your betting on in order to increase the winnings.

Why would you do that????????? You play to win! And if you have no money on the game, there is absolutely no reason to lose...............

And if you start doing things that seem suspicious, play a pitcher out of order (c'mon, not gonna happen), you're gonna get busted.........

Gambling has a way of making people do irrational things. It's not hard to conceive a manager, particularly a manger of a losing team, fooling with his lineup in order to win a game here or there. If you've got $50,000 on the line why not bring a starter out of the bullpen on 2 days rest like it's the 7th game of the WS? Getting caught is not what people are thinking about just like people aren't thinking about how they're going to pay their rent when they bet the rent money on a game. Winning the bet is all that matters. For the record I've got no problem with individuals betting on sports, but I do have a problem with anyone who can influence the outcome betting.

Pete Rose loved Pete Rose. He was an a$$hole's a$$hole.

Do you know the man? Have you met him? Do you know anyone who personally knew him beyond being denied an autograph? If the answer is no, the opinion expressed is worthless and speaks more of the author of the message than anyone else.

Why are you trying to turn Pete Rose into a martyr? He brought all of this on himself, and then he lied for 20 years and refused to admit what everyone with half a brain cell knew. The man has no credibility whatsoever. And yes it is well documented that Rose is a jerk. I don't think what he did is as bad as the guys who took steroids, but that's like saying that armed robbery is not as bad as murder. They're both wrong and athletes who do gamble or take steroids should not be rewarded by being in the HOF. I've never understood the misplaced symapthy people have for Pete Rose, as if he was someone like Ted Williams.

Hey Guy's, the HOF is for what players did while they were ON the field playing .....
On his stats he put up on the field there is NO DOUBT that he belongs IN the HOF.

Was he caught gambling while playing ? NO.

This is REALLY simple, but him in as a player.

No one ever said he was a HOF manager.

The gambling issues have nothing to do with his playing time.

His time in prison was NOT because of gambling either.

Had Rose murdered someone, he would have been out of jail already, would that be better ?

I don't want him in. Why? Because if he had admitted that he had a problem when it first came out and got help for himself I wouldn't say that. But he trashed so many people that told the truth . And I believe we have still haven't heard all of what he really did. And I do believe he gambled when he played.

I dont think Pete should be in the Hall of Fame. Now, its too the point where its now not even about gambling. Its that he lied and was very arrogant about it. I think he thought that since he was Pete Rose that he could get away with it. Go back to the night in Atlanta, where the Jim Gray incident took place. He the people in the palm of his hand based on that ovation he got.

Jim Gray, NBC, were labeled the bad guys but Pete was the bad guy for lying. I just think if he would have apologized sooner he would've got in. The only person that wont put Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame is Pete Rose. He screwed up.

All sounds like reasons for him not to be in the HoF for being an ass. Not reasons for him to be banned from baseball.

There are a lot of lying people playing baseball right now, and they aren't going to be banned or stop lying anytime soon... until they're found out... if they ever will be.

If anyone ever saw the 1 hour interview Pete Rose did on the old Phil Donahue show they wouldn't vote him back in . He lied during the entire show. He also said this , "I'm willing to bet with anyone in this audience that I didn't bet on baseball". People laughed and Pete Rose didn't get the joke.

5 years ago Bud Selig looked at lifting the ban but he was told something about Rose that made him not even continue to look at lifting the ban. I'm guessing that Rose still bets on baseball and even did so as a player.

One other thought. I think it was Bill Conlin, a Philadelphia sports writer that wrote, lift the ban and let the writers vote to keep him out. That would more humiliating than the ban. Pete may be a jerk but no one can deny his talent on the field. I could care less about his HOF credentials but a lifetime ban is longer than most hardened criminals get.

Why are you trying to turn Pete Rose into a martyr?

Please don't change what I have said to suit your argument. You have not answered my question as to how you know about this man's personality beyond what you see on TV.

I asked one simple question and the answers have been completely unconvincing.
The answers have all been about the bad things he could have done, not what he did. He bet on his team to win. That is it. I still do not know how this is the worst possible thing a person could do. That is all I have been saying.

Are you trolling?

What basis do you have to make the statements you are making ???

He may not have been the nicest guy ever, which can probably be said about quite a few guys in the HOF, but he was one helluva baseball player, and that's why you get voted into the Hall of Fame as a player, isn't it?

He broke the rules. Johnny Bench said it best. Bench said they all knew the rules of baseball . Bench said they knew it was wrong. He also said if they lift the ban many who played with him will speak out to keep him out of the Hall of Fame. It amazes me how some want to forget what Rose did and what he did to the people who told the truth about what he did.

I understand what you are trying say. I personally think he should be banned from ANY participation. On the OTHER hand, credentials for the HOF have to do with what he did AS A PLAYER.

Now in regard to your question.....YES, he bet on his team to win, but him helping his team to win had NOTHING to do with winning and everything with winning the bets had had placed.....and there, you are messing with the integrity of the game because you are no longer winning to make the playoff and now just winning to avoiding your bookies.

But what he did as a manager has NOTHING of what he did as a player.....was there any proof of him betting on baseball while HE PLAYED? No. Was he a jerk as a player and a manager? Absolutely....but if we were to NOT let a$$****s into the HOF, more than likely HALF of the HOF would be empty....if not more.

I would have no problem with his lifetime ban if ALL the rules applied to EVERYONE *EVERY* time. If the MLB were consistent and applied the rules to everyone and banned everyone who broke every rule then I wouldn't have a beef. I find Rose's lifetime ban to be inherently unfair and targeted to destroy one man and just the one man.

So when your salary is based on performance and if you hit 40 HR in a season to get a bonus, are you hitting home runs to help your team win, or for your own financial gain?

If you get a bonus for helping your team make the playoffs, are you helping your team win because you want to win or for your own personal gain?

If you are in debt up to your eyeballs and if you don't get a bonus you go bankrupt, are you playing for your team's benefit or your own?

The motivation argument makes no sense for professional players. Everyone on the field has a monetary incentive to win! Some have a real performance incentive.

So you believe that Rose just started to gamble when he became a Manager? I don't . In fact I believe Rose gambled for years before that. You just don't start to gamble like he did. Remember, Rose voluntarily accepted a permanent place on baseball’s ineligible list as long as MLB agreed to make no formal finding with regard to the gambling allegations.
