NFL Network to Offer "Red Zone Channel": Alternative to Sunday Ticket?

Only one cable company has signed on and this will probably be the only one that does. Many companies do not want to waste bandwidth on a part-time channel when the NFL channel could theoretically do the same thing themselves.

It seems like every provider would want to carry this...I hope E* does. Why wouldn't NFLN just make their flagship channel the "Redzone" channel from 1-7 on Sundays?? That would make more sense.

Why the hell wouldn't providers be jumping at the opportunity to add this channel? Most of the people I know who have Sunday Ticket, subscribe SOLELY for the Red Zone Channel. And they pay $400 just to get it! You'd think this would be an extremely popular and highly sought channel if offered to the masses, not to mention a competitive option to ST.

The reason they are jumping is because it cost .25/subscriber, which is high for a part time channel. And it may be sought after by the NFL masses, but not the whole subscriber base.

I subscribe to NFL ST and its mainly to get my favorite team, since I live out of market. I think Red Zone channel is most popular with the Fantasy Football crowd.

Screw the NFL on this one......I wonder how much they are charging providers for the POS that is the NFL Network? Now they actually have some compelling content and they're creating a new channel and charging more? I hope nobody carries it and the NFL is forced to lower its ransom demand.

NFLN cost much more. In a recent article it stated the following:

Comcast and the NFL said Tuesday that they had reached an agreement for the nation's largest cable TV operator to air the football channel on its second-most popular digital tier of service. The deal spans 10 years and would cost Comcast 40 cents to 45 cents per subscriber, down from the NFL's previous asking price of 70 cents. It did say that the NFL threw in access to DirecTV's Red Zone Channel with the deal. So they are probably using Red Zone as a bargaining chip, to get cable co's to carry NFLN.

what they did to appease comcast and probably others is they told comcast if you offer nfl netwok on digital basic we will let you offer the red zone channel on the sports package.
Same thing espn did. They got espnu on digital basic in exchange for putting espn classic on digital sports.

Not me, I don't watch the extra stuff like the Red Zone and whatever the other channel is they have, I do check in on the Sunday Snap just to catch up on scores.

As far as I'm concerned they can drop the Fantasy garbage and offer the ST with the HD much cheaper and offer a separate package for those that want the fantasy stuff .... Have them pay for it, I'm tired of paying extra for stuff they offer because you have to buy it just to get your games in HD .

From my recollection, only Fox games were carried on the late time slot last year. Not all games appeared on Red Zone. I wonder if that will change this year.

BTW,

Red Zone is hardly an alternative to the ST.
ST is all the games, not the Fantasy Football stats.

Same here. SF features are great for those that are willing to pay extra for Red Zone, online items, etc, but imo, we should not have to pay the SF fee for HD access to the games. I was fortunate to get one of the recent "deals" so I have SF free this season but I don't agree with DTV's must-have-SF for HD policy.

Directv's Redzone has nothing to do with fantasy stats. It's just a great way to keep up with everything exciting that's going on all around the league. They jump from play to play and sometimes have 2 games on at once. A good announcer and NO commercials.
What NFLN's version will be like I don't know but it probably won't be as good.

When the Chiefs aren't playing, the Red Zone channel is the best part of Sunday Ticket. That channel is fantastic for just seeing everything that's going on. THe drama as multiple games are ending and you get to watch these desperation drives, sometimes 3-4 at a time, is incredible. Watching one guy rip off an 15 yard scramble for TD to ice a game while at the same time watching someone shank the game winning field goal is great.

What is it that they have that you can aset up and track all your players then, must call it something else ... still stuff I have no desire to have and should not have to pay for it,if all I want is my games in HD, if you want the extras fine, they need to make a package for JUST THAT then and quit screwing us for an addl $ 100.

You buy a PPV and get HD for an addl dollar. thats fine, I'll give them an addl dollar a week, but not a HUNDRED for the year.
The price of ST has gotten way out of hand, I use to get it for $ 79 a year in the beginning.

I understand that you don't want to pay extra just for the HD. No one does. I was just defending my favorite channel. Lots of people post about it being fantasy stuff and that's just not right. I'm with you on the $100 but I haven't actually had to pay it yet. I have called and gotten it for free every year.

When there have only been 3 late games they have cut off Redzone when all of the early games have finished.

That's funny. I've never watched it. When my game goes into commercial, I tune to the channel that shows eight games. I replaced my 40" LCD with a 52" LCD last year to make it more watchable.

I don't pay just to get that channel. I want the HD and that is the only way to get it is in the SuperFan.
