I called up the folks at The Dish Store to signup today. I'm glad I did but, after reading thread after thread, I'm getting more and more confused and the 722k...

I had asked the gentlemen @ The Dish Store for a VIP722 since it already has a built-in OTA tuner but he said that my local installer likely would not have any. So, I'm getting a 722k and purchasing an OTA tuner for it ($29). He said that the 722k has a larger hard drive than the 722 but this is contrary to what I've been reading online. Not a big deal either way but I am wondering if he's correct or not.

Secondly, regarding the 722k, suppose on TV1 I want to record a show on TBSHD and watch ESPNHD. When I'm done watching ESPNHD and begin watching the recorded show from TBSHD, will I be watching it in full HD or will it be in SD? I realize that I would be SD on TV2.

Thanks in advance. I'm glad to be back with Dish!

On the way...

The 722K with OTA module will give you one extra OTA tuner to record/watch from as opposed to the 722. The hard drive sizes are not at all different.

All tuners record in HD if the source is an HD channel. Playback of your hypothetical TBS programming will be in HD if viewed on TV1 and SD if viewed on TV2.

Very good. Thank you.

You can set the unit up where you watch HD on TV1 and record HD on TV 2.
Now, this puts tv 2 out of service but that does not bother most users. The way my installer set mine up, i could not watch the main tv while a program was being recorded. Your owners manual has info you need to switch it.

Err- no, depending upon what you meant.

The inputs are different from (and independent of) the outputs. You can record, in HD even, on the tuners (inputs) for the two satellite inputs, and the one or two (depending upon model) OTA tuner(s). The outputs are completely separate. The TV1 output will output in HD (assuming using HDMI/DVI and -usually- component) if the source was in HD. The TV2 output always outputs in SD, regardless of if the source material was in HD or SD.

You can record two programs off satellite, and 1 or 2 programs OTA, and still be watching yet another program off the DVR recordings list. Depending upon how you have set up your DVR (single or dual) and what you are doing, you can watch a different show on TV2 from what is on TV1.
