My brothers and I bought our parents an HDTV for Christmas that will arrive before Christmas. My Mom managed to get the $75 install fee to upgrade her receiver and dish to HD capability (originally they were telling her $150).

My question is will they have an HDMI cable when they come install the stuff for them or will they try to sell them one for $50? I will buy them one from monoprice for $5-$10 to assure they have one if DISH won't be giving them one during the install.

Thanks for any advice.

Which HD unit?

When my 722k came I was really surprised to see that they had sent an HDMI cable with it. I can't say for the other units. In fact the cable was exact same type that I had bought 3 of from mono-price a few months before.

My HD receivers (installed about 5 months ago now) did not come with HDMI cables.

I've been picking them up locally at Big Lots, believe it or not. 6' HDMI cable for $12. I believe it's marked on the package as being HDMI 1.3.

If its a in-house dish tech they will not supply a HDMI but they will have component cables. But some subs like the company I work for do supply HDMI cables for free. Your best bet is to buy one and have it there in case.

The 722K that was shipped to me had one. When a tech comes and brings a unit, I always grab all the plastic bags when the box is first opened and put them out of site, except for the remotes. Been too many reports of them taking the stuff with them, including the owners manuals.

Was it shipped to you are was it brought out by an installer? I just wonder if the later that the installer may have held on to it to try and make a bit more on the install.

The DVR was brought out by the installer. He left a plastic bag with a component cable, the owner's manual, two remote control overview cards, and two station line-up cards. He never suggested selling me a cable, but I had one sitting right there next to the TV.

when i upgraded to HD and a 722 they did not bring a HDMI cable with them eventhough the CSR had told me they would. i would buy one

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like the better safe than sorry approach is to just mail one to my parents and if they don't end up needing it then they'll have a spare.

the smartest thing to do would be to wait and see if the installer brings an hdmi cable. If not, then just go buy one, or use the component cables that still deliver hd quality and are free.

The last receiver Dish supplied HD cables with was the 942(about 3-4 years ago), it came with component and the DVI/HDMI cable. Dish wants us independent co.s to just give HD cables to the customer, but my boss (owner of company) says forget that, that's just another way for Dish to reduce what they pay us for installs. We charge $20 for component and $30 for HDMI. That is still less than if they go to Radio Shack or Best Buy.

You may or may not get an installer who will give you HD cables, I would get some from Monoprice anyway.
