Do I have to push select every morning?

Since I am a newbie to Dish Network (had my system installed last week) I would like to know a couple of things....

1) Do I have to push select every day to turn on the tv? When I turn on the tv for the first time each day, the screen says to press select to watch Dish Network. This does not work very well if I use the tv as my alarm.

2) I have two HD receivers, I believe one has the second remote set to band A and the other one has the second remote on band B. The one on band A does not work as well as the one on band B. Can I have both secondary remotes on band B and if so, what do I need to do to change the one using band A?

Thanks.

The only times it does that without your input is during nightly updating or after inactivity for a number of hours. You can change the time of updates and/or timeout durations to not interfere with your alarm.

I can answer #1) The receiver is programmed to download new software and reboot... generally at 3am every day. If you want to wake up to the TV, set a timer on the DVR to whatever show you want to be on when you wake up. In theory, it will automatically turn on and tune to that show. Just FYI, some people (me included) have had this not work (still need to press 'select' to turn sat box on). Or it will work for a couple weeks and then stop working.

The receiver goes into a download mode every night. When it is done it shuts off and goes to the press select screen. You may want to change the time of the download to when you are gone.

As for the remotes, I beleive you can have both on the same letter. Just need to make sure the remote addresses are different.

Thanks for the responses. Do the receivers have to update every day? Can m-f be different than sat-sun?

As for the remotes, how do I know what address to use or change to?

If you press menu twice it will bring up the system info screen. On that screen it will tell you the remote addresses. If you want to change the remote address grab the remote you want to change and follow these steps.
-Press and hold the SAT button untill the lights at the top of the remote all light up red.
-Enter in any number from 1 to 16
-Press the # button
-The SAT button should flash 3 times
-Press the record button, this should change the remote address on the screen
Done and now cancel out of the menu.

And this will also change it from band A to band B?

Setup an "auto-tune" timer (not a record timer) for the time & channel you want to wake up to. This has never failed to turn on the receiver for us. For several years now, our 622 receiver auto-tunes to the Disney Channel every morning at 6AM so that the kids find child friendly programming on TV every morning no matter what channel my wife and I were watching last night. Our receiver reboot time is still set to the default 3AM, and if you check the receiver between 3:10ishAM and 6AM it is showing the "Press Select" screen saver. However, every morning when the kids come down and turn on the TV, the receiver is always "on" and displaying live TV.

Isnt there a way in the menus to turn that off?

I know my old 811 had that option and my dad's 301's & 311 do....do the new receivers dont have that option?

Not an option on VIP receivers. No longer can turn off or set to ask for permission. Just can set the time, to the minute!

Exactly !

Just power off the box with the remote before going to sleep and when you hit power on the remote the next day it turns on and doesnt ask you to press select, even if it did a software update and/or reboot.

That is 100% correct but perhaps irrelevant?

My wife and I work "erratic" schedules. And no matter what time I change it to it always seems like its wanting to do a update when one of us is watching tv. I just find it very odd Dish needs to do a update every single night...

Not really odd.

Supposedly Dish Network changes the encryption method rules nightly in the Nagravision 3 system.

Just what they have to do to keep non-paying viewers out. ;)

ERR...NO!

Nagravision does a running encryption revision on its own - that's part of the encryption itself.

One other thing I learned (maybe from this forum): You have to set the auto-tune to AT LEAST one hour after the daily update is scheduled. Not sure why, but I have a VIP receiver connected to a computer to record and store programs, and was frustrated because the computer-controlled remote couldn't wake up the receiver.
