My attempt from switching to 61.5/110/119 to Eastern Arc

I guess this all starts from my first call to Dish and asking them about the switch. At first the CSR doesn't know what I'm talking about and starts getting a bit defensive about it. I ask her to talk to her supervisor about it and she does and confirms that I'm right about new HD being put on 72.7 and immediately schedules an eastern arc move. Unfortunately, she also insists I must replace my 311 with a HD solo tuner. Personally, I did not want this because the 311 only powers 2 little crappy CRT TV's and I have no plans upgrade them. (Guess I do now) Since they offered the receiver for free, I took it as I don't care about re-upping my 2 year commitment since I don't have any other TV options anyway. (Cable sucks here and when we tried to switch to D*, they gave us a lot of trouble regarding our install demands) Anyway, call ends, appointment confirmed.

Fastforward to the install. Tech shows up promptly, installs my new HD receiver and I then ask him about eastern arc. He then says I don't need it because I already get all of my channels off of 110/119/61.5. He checks with his guys back at HQ just to make sure and they confirm. So I call dish, get a CSR and she contacts the tech's HQ. As I am doing this, the tech calls what sounded like a special tech support line for installers. At first they say the same thing HQ told him before but they double check to make sure.

I then see the expression on the face of tech turn into a look of disbelief. I guess someone broke the news to him. He then goes on asking how Dish could not inform their own techs about this, what will I do if I need internationals and need 118.7, yada, yada, he hangs up and then takes the phone from me and talks to the Dish CSR asking to pass a message up to corporate. He is obviously not pleased. After his little chat with the Dish CSR's, he tells me he can't install a new dish because there's over a 1'+ snow on my roof. Perfectly understandable, I wouldn't go up there either if I was him.

He internally reschedules the install for next week, hopefully the snow will be gone by then.

Overall, I was very pleased with the tech. He stuck with me for over 90 minutes playing CSR roulette with multiple dish agencies. He could have easily jetted off at any time and moved on to his next job. However, I am disgusted with Dish and their obvious lack of communication skills. How can a whole bunch of guys on the internet know about what's going on up in the sky before the actual techs do? Absolutely unbelievable.

At this point, I'm worried that I might lose my SD locals when I'm moved to eastern arc next week. I'm pretty sure Dish moved them off of 61.5 to 119 a while back once the new sat was up to clear some space off. Can anyone confirm? (NYC DMA)

Quite frankly, all I want is 72.7, I could care less about 77 but I guess we'll see what happens next week when the techs come back out again.

Did anyone have a similar experience?

311 will only work with 119/110/61.5 you will lose SD Locals. Unless the W/O actually has the 1k4 dish on it most techs will not do the job with out there office giving an OK. Unless you order the package with the additional HD channels on it the W/O will not reflect the 1k4 dish. GOOD LUCK

When I was switched to EA last Spring because of LOS problems (BIG trees) I lost my SD locals on 110 but I couldn't have cared less. First of all I never watched 'em in crappy SD and also receive them OTA. I had a 1000.2 and a wing dish for 61.5 because HD locals were there. EA solved my problems with LOS and of course now with this mess involving the new HD I'm even more grateful I got swapped.

Hopefully some day all stations will be broadcast in HD and SD will be a thing of the past - That would seem to be the general direction things are going. Seems kind of a waste to be broadcasting SD channels when HD channels are available, anyways.... ;) That being said, last week I got switched from two dishes doing 119/110/61.5 to one dish (1000.4 EA) doing 61.5/72.7/77 at which point some of the SD versions of my locals disappeared; but they're all still there in HD, so I could care less, and the HD channels show up just fine on CRT TVs. The tech who did the installation seemed to think that EA was the way to go, especially when any future new channels come along - We shall see.....

DBS Commando, I did the same thing to get up graded. But the problem I had was the coax cables were to short were the switch is and to were the dish was placed. So instead of a 1k4 dish the tech put up a 1k2 dish with a DPP 44 switch. My set up was 61.5/110/119 to now 61.5/110/119/129. The tech for my install did go up on the snow and ice covered roof to do the install. He was very carefull and really wanted to put up the EA dish but the cables were just too short. Hang in there and they will get you set up right.

Barrel connectors, while not the greatest thing, make short cables any length you need. I'm not buying the need to have one kind of dish over the other.

There are a bunch of HD customers who for some reason, insist on getting SD locals. Some believe SDs won't be letterboxed, but most of them are.

My installer came with 1k2 but didnt think i'd get 129- also couldnt use location where 500 dish was cause 1k2 dish wouldnt fit there and needed extra brackets plus He didnt want to get near my roof with it - no snow just steep. He also didnt think i could get 72.7 but again thats was because of roof. Waiting for call back tomorrow but am skeptical call will ever come tho tech was helpful. Right now i have 110/119/61.5 ideally EA with 110 would be solution but dont really need 110.

If every local channel was HD your argument would hold up. Many locals are SD only, but digital today. Dishnetwork has those channels in the SD local group. If I want to watch, say, KFTY in the SF Bay Area, I need the SD channels as well as the HD channels.

They are coming tomorrow to install my EA dish. They are keeping the other three 510 DVR's hooked up to the Dish 500 and the 612 DVR will be hooked up to the EA. I hope they come tomorrow and don't pull anything saying that I don't need a EA.

I've got my dish on the side of the house - Some years back I paid good money to have new roof shingles put on, and I'll be damned if I'm gonna put holes in my roof unnecessarily. Besides, it makes it a hack of a lot easier to access, should you ever have to do work or keep the snow off it. ;)

Maybe I just lucked out, or Dish actually planned it that way; but in getting the Boston locals, those that are SD only are there, while those that had both SD & HD are there as HD only.

I have no problem where he puts it. My 61.5 is on the railing of my 3rd floor deck- I just walk out on the deck and swipe the snow off my dish. He can even access my roof with a small step ladder from the deck. Dish doesnt like the idea of dish on railing but its solid and quality control thought so too. If they dont want to do it I could just sit in a chair drinking beers and try it myself. :)

The NYC SD locals (everything except the big 4 and CW) are at 61.5. The other 5 HD locals are also at 61.5°. If you have Eastern Arc then you have an HD receiver so there is no problem with the 'minor locals in NYC.

Well, I had my repoint this morning. Went well. First, the guy wanted to see if he could just repoint the wing dish to 129. As I managed to determine from the ground, this was impossible as the main Dish 500 was in the way. So he got 1000.2. I was hoping for a 1000.4, but I wasn't going to argue.

It looked like he was going to yank off the old wing dish, but I talked him into reconnecting it. Figured the dish was their, the switch space was their, might as well use it. The installer wasn't convinced it would work, but he was kind enough to do it anyway. I figure this way, I'm closer to being future proof.

While there, the installer also replaced the corroding barrel connectors, ground block, and diplexer on the side of the house. All and all a good experience.

So channels like WLIW are in SD on the eastern arc.
