In the past three weeks, my network has continuously dropped throughout the day. After several resets and upgrading the firmware on my Linksys WRT54GS, I called Cox and they said that the problem was not with the modem. Therefore, what is a good Wireless N router I can upgrade to?

Good question and one I was meaning to post myself!

I am upgrading toa Gigabit network and need Gigabit on the router too.

So any suggestions? I want one that offers good transfer speeds.

What version of the WRT54GS do you have? Many are flashable to DD-WRT. Check here for DD-WRT compatibility.

Two quick questions Voyager:
1. What is DD-WRT?
2. From my problem description, do you think a flash would even fix the problem?

Update: Cannot find the mini download for my router (WRT54GS v4.71.4). Apparently the micro version is needed due to the on-board ram of the router

DD-WRT is a third-party firmware update that replaces the Linksys firmware. DD-WRT unlocks many features of your router that are locked out by Linksys. In many cases, it is more stable than the original firmware. You can also adjust the transmit power of your router for fewer dropouts and extended range. You can also try updating your firmware from Linksys. More info about third-party firmware can be found here. DD-WRT and Tomato are the most popular third-party firmware for the WRT54 routers. Try a firmware update/replacement before buying a new router. Follow the instructions precisely from the DD-WRT wiki or you could "brick" your router.

Thanks . . . I did update the firmware on Linksys and problem continued. If I can find the correct download for DD-WRT, I will try that next. Thanks again!

You can find your version by comparing the first four digits of the serial number to the list found here.

Anything but Linksys, I have owned several and they constantly drop and have to be rebooted. D-Link and Netgear are good. I have not had any problems with them.

I purchased a DLink DIR-825 a few months ago. Im not using it as a router, but just as an access point. Its been rock solid since the day I hooked it up.

I love the Belkin Wireless N+ router; it works very well, is fast, and is easy to use.

Unlike linksys, it uses 192.168.2.x instead of 1.x and that messed me up for a bit; and I had to reset my slingbox to get it to see it, but once that was done, it has worked great.

The wireless antenna and router is in my basement, and I have NO access issues anywhere in my home, including on the 2nd story.

It also works with all of my linksys switches.

Does anyone know how to turn my WRT54gs into just a switch?

At work we use a Belkin N1 Vision. Works fine. However, shortly after install I disabled the wireless portion, for security purposes, so I can't vouch for long term use for that feature.

After extensive reviews I did go with the WNDR3700 (thanks primestar31 for mentioning it). Amazon had one of their buy this and that, get a discount, so I bought the router and the new Motorola SB6120 modem. They will be here Wednesday. I will post experience with setup and then post a review after using it for a bit.

The setup is as follows:
1. Setup router / modem
2. Hard wire the PS3 / Dish receiver
2. 3 Computers wireless / 3 Laptops wireless / 1 Wii wireless

I am glad I am off Friday as I will be having a great time setting this all up!

I am on the same cable system as you cjwct, and upgraded to the SB6120 cable modem...

We have DOCSIS 3 in the area now, but honestly I think that my old 5100 modem ran better. It just seemed smoother this one seems to have delays when doing things. In addition now really seeing any better speeds on the D3 modem then I did with the D2 modem.
