Is Directv broadcasting the World Cup in 1080P? And if so am I screwed if I have a Samsung Plasma TV PN58C550G1F and a Directv HR-20 box from getting the 1080p broadcast? Just bought TV and have been reading some bad stuff about this. I love the TV's picture but if I'm not going to get the best available picture then I'm not paying $1500.

The HR20 will do 1080p fine.

As for the WC.... if it is being shown on ESPN.
ESPN does 720p

Are there other channels that are showing it ?
Can't tell on the PPV side of things 102-106 as you get a message if you don't have 3D equipment.

Univision HD... i find that Univision has better HD picture than ESPN or ABC

No your not.
ESPN is 720p only.
Your TV may convert it, but ESPN sends out 720p
Why would you want 1080i over 720p ?

The HR24 was up-converting signal to 1080i not the TV. The HR24 came with native turned off so I left it like that. I unchecked 480i,480p But left 720p,1080i,1080p checked. Why the HR24 was not 480,720p or 1080p, I'm not sure. Must have to do with default software settings.

So after your post I checked the native box on and yes ESPNHD shows 720p now.
My Onkyo uses HQV Reon-VX processor considered one of the best at up-converting so will allow it to work alone with native on. Everything gets up-converted to 1080p in the end so 1080 or 720 it all looks good.

I know just enough Spanish to get me in trouble, but when I have soccer fan friends over we just mute the audio and continue to party.

I don't care if you have a super secret CIA XRSTEALTH6000, no equipment, and I mean that can make ESPN anything look as you would say "good". We settle for what we get with ESPN. "Good" compared to what?

The source is the source!
