Streaming content from PC to 722k?

I recently (yesterday) had Dish Network installed. I was previously using an older TiVo box with the "TiVo Server" (small application) running on my PC. This allowed me to stream content (Movies and Pictures) from the PC to my TV through the TiVo box.

Is there a way to do this with the 722k?

This was a really simple setup on my old system.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Nope. This is the last thing that Dish could provide that would make me forget all about TiVo. TiVo sends me surveys every few months and I rip them a new one in the comments for going to cable only. Sling is the closest thing to what you are looking for. There was supposed to be a Slim Sling box for the 722's out back in June, but they are still not out yet (or just buy a standard Sling box). Sooo sick of seeing "coming soon".

How did you connect the pc to the TIVO? Can you connect the pc directly to the TV?

The PC is connected to home router via ethernet cable from basement, TiVo was connected to home router via ethernet cable in family room. Can't connect PC (it's huge, and my primary PC) directly to the TV.

Thanks for the replies.

Isn't the VIP 922 supposed to support DLNA to stream music, photos, and videos from a computer?

Dish Network ViP922 SlingLoaded DVR Review & Rating | PCMag.com

"Besides being able to remotely watch what's on the ViP922, you can stream media to the box you can view it on your HDTV. The ViP922 supports DLNA, so if you have a computer with a DLNA server on the same network, the ViP922 can see it and you'll be able to view pictures, videos, and music from the PC on your TV. (Windows 7 offers native support for DLNA, and a Google search will turn up free DLNA programs for Mac OS X.)"

Not sure, but I think the thing about DLNA is you have to make sure your satellite box and your wired/wireless router is "DLNA compliant". Plus, your PC needs to be pretty powerful and needs to have the Windows 7 operating system.

Pretty soon, I am probably going to junk my old router and get the new "Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router" (WNDR3700) that is "DLNA compliant".

WNDR3700

I'm also going to get this "Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band USB Adapter" to attach to a USB slot on my VIP 722 using the included "USB cable with cradle and fastener". I don't want to have to wire my house with a bunch of CAT-5 cable.

WNDA3100

Once I hear that the VIP 922 has more of the bugs fixed and the Dish Network "Sling Extender" is available so I can connect the 922 to my other TVs, I will upgrade to that satellite box system. Gotta have that "Sling Extender" available or I won't upgrade.

Sling Media - Sling Receiver 300

Hopefully, by Christmas, I'll have the VIP922 in place and it'll be a heck of an entertainment system .... anywhere I go ... in the house on my other TVs, my PC, laptops, on my iPhone, etc. Plus, with DLNA, any videos or photos you have on your PC or storage device can be shown on any TV, PC, iPhone, etc. Everything will be available at your fingertips. I'll be a "Digital Man" like a song by one of my favorite rock bands "Rush". :)

I just hope that Dish Network's engineers are working hard testing all of this stuff and it won't be a nightmare of bugs, glitches, and software update problems. I'm tired of all that aggravation!

BE VERY AFRAID OF NEW TECH FROM DISH. If you don't want bugs and glitches in software ,you had better wait till they get the 922 working right. Still no archiving to an external hard drive. THe remote access sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Recordings sometimes hangup and you miss half the show. That is just the 922 itself. God only knows what the sling extender will have in it, in the way of bugs.

If it were me, i'd get a WDTV Live (~$60) and use that to watch your movies from your PC and look at pics. It will connect to your router and if everything is set up correctly with your PC, it will see all the shared content on that.

Just make sure you get the WDTV Live and not just the WDTV which does not support access via the network out of the box.

You act like E* is the only one that has problems w/ new tech stuff. Not true MS used to tell me that anyone that adopts one of their new OS's for the 1st year is going to have trouble. The only OS that didn't have big bugs in it was Win 7. Reason for that was the fact in reality Vista was a dog and turned out to be the beta for 7. Blu-Ray had early problems until the newer plug-ins were added. So most all new tech has bugs in it. Rant over.

I NEVER said that DISH is the only product with problems with new tech. But having 14 years of service and experience with new DISH receivers, allows me to say with clear conscience that DISH has buggy software in their new receivers. EVERY new DISH receiver I have ever had, has had bugs. And since the guy was thinking of getting a 922, I felt it was my responsibility and moral obligation to warn him of the problems he might experience and to save him the potential pain and aggravation. Especially since he said he wanted to avoid aggravation.

Here are some of the receivers I have bought and used with DISH over the last 14 years. Some of them I had multiple versions.

4900 model
7100/7200 dishplayer
501/508/510 dvrs
721/921 dvrs
811 receiver
522/942 dvrs
622/722/722k
211k receiver
922 dvr

This is truth. We have been beta testers since the 7100/7200 dishplayers and you might even consider the 5000 with that add-on.

Any consumer electronics company that would have that history would have been out of business years ago.

No company has the poor history of Dish Network. At least not one still in business. But you still have to defend them, don't you?

Bull MS has a track record of releasing OS's that should've wait longer. As far a defending them I'm just stating that there hardware isn't that much buggier than other hardware. No yaz your not gonna get a rise out of me this time.
