OFFICIAL DISH / FOX ORDEAL DISCUSSION THREAD

Does it mean anything that the guide for the removed RSN's returns to normal at 7:00 PM on Tuesday night? Beginning then, the "Important News! Press Info!" message in the guide ends and normal programming is listed. Anyone know anything about that?

This dispute really affects all the providers, so it's important to all of us. But I'll be honest, the D* forums are really boring. Nothing happens there, the equipment just works, no contract disputes, and not whining about I don't have "x" channel. :D

No only the normal threads like why is my DVR so slow and why was my contract extended.;):D

Means nothing. Just that that's as far as they've programmed that message. On Friday, the Info message was only for a few hours, then the regular schedule was listed. They just kept rolling the info message.

I have stayed with DISH for 5 years but this was the last straw. Just scheduled Directv install for 10/16. Really did not want to change but with the DVR fee increase, Disney and FOX disputes I could not take it anymore. I know no provider is perfect but DISH has got to stop doing this or the churn will just get worse. I actually will pay less per month than I am now after the 1 year of rebates. I got Choice ultimate with whole house DRVR and Free hd for life. Got 1 Hd DVR and 4 hd receivers.

A little advise make sure the installer installs the HR24? or you won't be happy.;)

DirecTV must be hurting for subscribers heck they have sent me 18 letters inviting me to come back since Oct.2009.;)
Yeah...

They are the ones hurting. They were the ones that lost subs last quarter. They are the ones that have plenty of HR24's left because nobody is signing with them.

I doubt it, they just have your contact information. Just doing what any business would do. They're having trouble keeping up with new installations and are running out of HD equipment. :)

Okay, this is a really misleading list of "dropped" channels

Hey, I have owned four Hondas, but I don't hate Toyota nor do I need to "diss" Toyota online in order to make myself feel good about my car choice. That is why I have never said anything against DirecTV, because I have never had it in my house, so I cannot comment on it (other than I have checked pricing, and my cost for D* would be about $20 per month more without new customer promotion discounts).

So, concerning the list...

Numbers 25-47 have been off for 48 hours or so (and Dish offered to extend the existing contract during negotiations, which Fox refused, so it is Fox who dd the "dropping").

Number 9-23 are ancient dead channels partially owned by Dish that were essentially demo channels for HD. Now that every TV channel is in HD, we do not need special HD channels so we can say "Ooh it is HD !". We do not see Dish carrying a special "Color TV Channel" from 1964 either. ;)

24 is a channel owned by a group of premium channels, and Dish still carries the rest of their channels, so they have simply decided it is not worth the cost and space. I never see "Give Me Back My Smithsonian Channel" so obviously hardly anyone watched it.

5 was a fake channel created by Dish to show how easily one could create a Weather Channel. The idea that you are calling it a "dropped" channel is hilarious !

8 was even more hilarious - possibly the worst TV channel of all time. It consisted of shows filmed on $29 camcorders starring $29 ho's.

SO, prior to this weekend, there was the Disney/ESPN HD channel dispute a few months ago, Fuse and GolTV. Dish has recently been in talks with GolTV, but the lack of action indicates that they still think it is over-priced.

Fuse is owned by MSG channel, and Dish is currently in a price dispute with MSG this weekend as well.

For those who of you who like to say "Why doesn't DirecTV ever have disputes", note that you could just as easily have said "Why don't Turner and NBC/Universal ever have disputes ??" Notice that no one has ever had to drop CNN or NBC due to a pricing dispute.

PS DirecTV has dropped more channels than just Versus - for example, they dropped "Trio" and then the channel went out of business a few months later...

This is the list of Dropped channels from July 4 2007-Now.

  1. DisneyHD,
  2. ESPNews HD,
  3. Disney XD HD,
  4. ABC Family HD,
  5. Weather Cast HD,

  22. FUHD,
  23. WorldCinemaHD,
  24. Smithsonian HD
  25. FX
  26. National Geographic

    Lost All Over disputes.

So that makes me think Dish is the one with the problem.
NONE of these have Reappeared, YET!

I see you point, but at the same time they are having disputes with MSG, Disney, and Fox. At some point you have to ask, are ALL of these separate companies the ones with the issues, or is it just one company that has the issue with all of the others. With all things being equal, the latter is more probable.

Just wanted to vent that I was not able to see the Braves clinch their first playoff spot in several years because of this dispute.
They have not clinched anything yet. The Padres have to lose for them to clinch today. If the Padres win, then the Braves will be involved in a one game playoff with the loser of the one game playoff between the Giants and Padres

Last quarter's D* HD anticipation thread at DBSTalk had nearly 5,000 post (and nearly 300,000 views) of whining about missing channels x, y, z, etc. (many of them mine). This quarter's thread is averaging 100 posts per day. We've got plenty of issues over here, but D* is definitely not immune either. They are way behind Dish on HD nationals, in spite of all Dish's recent loses.

+1

D* also avoids many disputes by simply not negotiating at all. Where are AMC, BBCA, Cooking, DIY, E!, G4, HLN, Nat Geo Wild, TCM, etc., etc. on D*? No public dispute, so no bad press. But that doesn't change the fact that they have their own disputes we never hear about.

Channels are not up yet because of contracts, not because of bandwidth. I would prefer to get the contracts right and prolong putting a channel up vs taking a channel down once the contract is up because either side was not fully happy with the original contract

I would prefer to have ~24 more HD national channels at any given time than to prolong (indefinitely?) putting a channel up to get the contracts "right."

Seriously... If people are so happy with D*, or any other provider for that matter, why don't they stay over on their forum in happyland.

Me myself I am 100% happy with DISH, not going anywhere anytime soon, and I am not over at the D* forums bitching and moaning to make myself happier with my own decisions.

Both Dish and Fox were happy with the original contract. It expired.

Dish asked Fox to extend the original contract while they negotiated and Fox refused.

Note that the Braves fan who posted above missed his game as a result.

Currently I am watching the Padres-Giants game in HD on Dish because Comcast would rather just collect more money from advertisers.

Surely Dish would be happy to pay Fox the exact same amount they are paying Comcast for the exact same content (except in different regions, of course), but clearly Fox wants more... Fox refused the temporary extension in order to get viewers to force Dish to give them more money.

Yeah, you and Hoosier205 over at the other site are just waiting for D* to get it done 'right'! :)
