OFFICIAL DISH / FOX ORDEAL DISCUSSION THREAD

Seems as if this thread has gotten off subject. Looking for an update on the Fox/Dish dispute. Heard a rumor that FOX was going to drop more channels from Dish, any update?

I only heard about the Fox owned or previously owned O&O stations might be dropped coming Nov.1

What about customers that want to have both? You can not use the same coax cables for both D* and E*
in that case you would need 2 sets of wires, its a special case
and im sure either company would cahrge to run them
its cheaper to do it yourself

did you check the cost for a package equal to what you have now?
in my case it went up $12 a month, and $8 of that is a second reciver and mrv.
but i have 2 hd feeds, vs 1hd 1 sd

i still say that on equal packages the price diff is negligable, and the service is equal.

Corect and I ran all the wiring myself. When the house was being built.

Yes I did and I would want to own my equipment. Plus D* does not allow you to lease 4 HD-DVR's unless you bought them outright.

Yes, how about some status report on this issue? Sad that I can find out more about the dispute in my local paper than I can at Satelliteguys.

E* only supports 3 units, oh well
i cannot see owning the equipment, thats just me, too costly

i did like my dish when i had it, no issues
the only bad thing i can say is they dropped too many channels in the past year without decreasing fees
and they invreased the duo dvr fees.
i just thought it was time to switch, and im finding i like the other side of the fence.
but everyone has thier own requirements, and they cannot be delivered by every provider.

ive been looking, and there is nothing on the web, other then negotiations are ongoing

Comparing AT250 to Choice Ultimate. No premiums, just package to package with 2 HD DVRs (one in bedroom and one in living room).
When all promos and discounts are gone my bill will be $3 less with D* than it was with E*.

So I would agree that the price difference is negligible if comparing situations that are as nearly the same as you can get them in terms of equipment and programming.

I didn't switch for price (alone). I switched primarily because of the channel disputes. I'm in the Buffalo DMA and an avid Sabres fan. The prospect of missing a good portion (or all) of their season was probably the largest factor. The loss of Fox was then added on top of it.

My out-of-pocket was $49.99 to make the change. (Had to pay to upgrade to a pair of HD DVRs instead of 1 HD DVR and one HD receiver). I save $400 the first year and then the $3 a month the year after. I get MRV and my Sabres games in HD (they were in SD on E* when they had MSG). My son can run Directv2pc on his computer in his room and watch stuff off the DVR on his 32" LCD.

So there were several factors that had me looking. When they announced the Fox thing I was almost ready to switch, but still hanging on. The Fox thing was just the nail in the coffin. At that point I made my decision.

I bought a hi-gain rooftop antenna several years ago (we're about 22-23 miles from the tower) and installed it myself in the attic of my garage. It works great. But I agree, the all-in-one solution is probably more popular. E* receivers have the integrated capability, not sure about D*. I'm hoping my cable company's DVR will accommodate my OTA antenna as well.

Cable uses a different standard than over the air. So what you are suggesting will not work.

My E* bill is currently $146/mth. When I called D* to check prices, I was quoted an apples-to-apples rate of $106/mth after all the discounts roll off. Sounds fishy to me...like there are probably fees that they haven't included, but that's what they said. I then called E*, and they said there was no way that rate was correct. Of course, they said once the intro discounts roll off, I will be paying more than I am now. I was about to accept the challenge of detailing every expense, so I know for sure when she reminded me that I am committed thru next May on my current 2 year agreement.

She asked why I was considering leaving, and I told her it was because of a) the channels we have lost, and my fear that we may lose more in the coming months, and b) the lack of some fundamental HD channels that D* has like ESPNU HD.
She said she would pass my feedback along to upper management (I'm sure), but then she offered me three free moths of Starz just for being an outstanding customer. I asked if this would extend my 2 year agreement, and she said "no".

So, lesson learned. Call and inquire...you never know what they will give you.

go to the D* website, build the package you want
you can see what the cost will be (all fees are there)
for all 24 months
what do you have now?
for what your paying you can get the premier and 4 rooms of service

Maybe where you are thats true, but if you buy into the propaganda, you need a special antenna in most cases, and in most cases thats just isnt true. I live 18 miles from the canadian border in ny, due south of montreal. I have the same antenna I had before the switch, a 40 dollar ?(at the time) radio shack special on a rotor. I get 13 locals, including subs with the added bonus of the montreal locals, granted some of them are french.
According to Google Maps, 'champlain valley NY' is almost 100 miles south of Montreal. Picking up TV stations at 100-mile distance is not normal. You've got favorable conditions on your side...

You live in Chicago, which has like 23 channels OTA, (and great programming I might add). That is just NOT the case all over the U.S., and you have to understand that.

I live in a rural Michigan area, almost dead center of Michigan lower penisula. Since tv went digital, I can receive exactly 4 channels OTA. Three of them are ALL the same network, in 3 different directions! If the wind blows a tiny little bit, they digitize in and out, even with 100% signal. It SUCKS!

I have a new larger antenna with an amplifier, at the top of a tower, with a rotor. I used to be able to receive like 14 channels that were very watchable, but that went out the window with the digital transition. Believe me, there are LOTS of people in my boat, all over the U.S.

To install a good OTA antenna system from scratch, with at least a 30-40 foot tower, (too much wind on average around here, a rooftop antenna on a tripod would tear your roof off, and I used to be an Winegard installer and KNOW this) guy wire, rotor, coax wire, antenna, amplifier, you are looking at an outlay of at least $600+ retail IF you do it yourself, and don't get killed doing it. Want to pay somebody to do it? $1,200 minimum on average for our area.

It's a lot cheaper to go cable or satellite, and a lot less hassle.

I completely understand your situation and I added in my original post that my situation doesn't apply to those who can't get good OTA. The point I'm trying to make that in a metro area like Chicago with around 11 million in the 6 county area, a huge number of these people could be getting outstanding HD PQ with all the sub-channels for a few hundred dollars investment. For me, my OTA isn't a substitute for cable/sat, but a complement to it.

Not true. The northern most area of the Champlain Valley is about 40 miles from Montreal. I think you are confusing this with Champlain Valley Exposition VT. That is about 100 miles from Montreal.

To me it sounds like jonsey is about 60 miles from Montreal.

The Champlain Valley is a big place. The one you picked, Essex, is 40 miles from the canadian border. Jonsey said he is 18 miles from the border. Notice that large lake on the map. The Champlain Valley can be anywhere close to it. According to the directions shown on your link, you start making turns here and there 32.9 miles from the border. That is the beginning of the Montreal area. I have made that trip a few times. I have also stayed at motels in northern New York and Montreal OTA was what I saw on TV along with Plattburg, NY / Burlington, VT locals.

Well, what I wanna see is 10,000 replies and one million views of this thread! Oh yeah, and have the dispute settled "soon"......
I kinda side with Charlie on this one, because otherwise where does it stop? I got a notice about 6 weeks ago that the Houston Chronicle (newspaper
was increasing their subscription rates about 15% on our plan, doesn't make sense. Readership is down so you're gonna up the price that much? Subs find out they can cut back or even do without when you gotta pinch pennies (whether it's pay tv, newspaper, wine of the month club, eating out, etc).
I'm an Absolute sub with one 622, I do have ota also. I bought a Dtvpal dvr a couple of months ago to record four streams (2 ota & 2 sat) and also the possibility of having to drop Dish altogether if need be. I miss Nat Geo, didn't have F/X or FSHouston to miss, so that's not a deal breaker for me. I think everyone has to decide what they can do with/without and at what price point, then respond accordingly. I still think the Absolute package is worth $38.32 a month, now if too many channels get dropped I might have to reconsider.

I bet jonesy99 is just using the term Champlain Valley NY as just referring to the NY side of the Champlain Valley basin. I'm on the Vermont side in Burlington which is also part of the CV. 18 miles from the border and due south of Montreal would put him close to north of Plattsburgh referring to the largest town in that area in NY. As you stated the Platt/BTV locals are what what we get here for Fox. Fox and the ABC affilate are owned by Smith media. So we should escape the blackout on 11/1 but the clock is ticking for how long after....

google maps is screwed there, did you try champlain ny or plattsburgh? I think i know where I live. The entire valley is perhaps 100 miles, I guess if i lived in glens falls that would be true.

Just as a caveat, before the switch to digital, the Portland maine ABC affilliate had a tower on Mt washington, which DID come in exceptionally clear where i live. Mileage means crap when you have height.
