how much does dish pay for a channel

That, my relatively recent joinee friend, is proprietary business information and would NEVER be released by Dish, DirecTV, Crapcast, U-Verse, Brighthouse, etc. by anything short of a court order.

Actually there are lists out there of how much the individual channels get from sat/cable cos. They have been posted here previously or maybe you can Google to find out. It's not really a big secret.

It really depends what channel it is. Obviously the ESPN networks are the most expensive at ~$4 per sub per month. Others I've heard of were the Turner networks at ~$1 per sub per month and I just read recently that OWN is only at $.07 per sub per month.

Wow. I thought the $4 for ESPN would be for ALL ESPN channels not just for the main ESPN-1. So let's add all this up.
ESPN: $4.08
ESPN2: $.54
*ESPN Classic: $.18
ESPNEWS: $.17
ESPNU: $.16
*ESPN Deportes: $.15
*= Not everyone subs to it.
Total at the very least: $4.95 * 14,200,000 customers =$70,290,000 for the big 4 ESPN channels for 1 month.

man that is alot of dough!

Kinda sad if you dont like sports/

Hey you want oreos:) Dont forgetyou MUST BUY a gallon of milk:(

Congress should require debundling, I mentioned to by house rep he hadnt a clue:(

I think the price is per sub not per customer. I am sure not every single dish customer has espn in their monthly subscription. I only suscribe to international channels and don't have espn so I don't think dish will be paying $5 to espn for me even though i don't even have espn in my package. I know other ppl too that only sub to international channels and not american packages. i might be wrong, but math should be $4.95 x numbers of subs to particular channel(espn).

I think when you add in all the money it costs to buy all the games (MLB, NBA, NFL, etc) it all adds up to a point where ad revenue is not enough to cover costs so you have to charge the providers a price where it would not only cover all expenses but also make a profit as well. Sports programming is expensive, therefore ESPN has to charge a high price to the tv providers which therefore, gets passed on to the consumers. I know it sucks, but unfortunately, we all have to deal with it.

If ESPN gets the Olympics (which they are bidding for and will probably win since NBC does not want them anymore) they are looking to increase their rate even more. :(

You are correct that it's not every customer or subscriber of Dish's (or DirecTV or a cable co). It's per subscriber, i.e. those who actually receive a particular channel. It does explain why ESPN/ABC/Disney wants to be in the lowest tiers, hence they hit the largest number of overall customers. ESPN and ESPN2 are in Dish's lowest, currently offered package (Dish America, $25/mo).
