I just got updated to Version 6.76 on my 722, and one of the new features is the highly anticipated volume leveling (which is supposed to prevent drastic volume level changes between programming and commercials). It appears to be on by default (Menu - 6 - 7). However, with it on, the Mode option (on the same page) is restricted to only RF (Line is greyed out). RF mode compresses the sound, and according to the Help info, it is typically used for late night viewing. Line mode is typically used for normal viewing (and it allows Dolby Stereo Surround).

So, I'm not sure I will use volume leveling at this point.

I've had this feature on my 722k for some time. I do not find it to be effective. I just checked and I see I've left it disabled.

If you go to line mode then "enable" it. It will automatically turn you into RF mode on 722k. I disabled it in less than a day as it compressed things so heavily thru 7.1 system it made me sick to my stomach.

My guess is that to do volume leveling, they need to compress it, so it can compare volume levels 'accurately'

It's a set compression level. It doubt seriously it does any comparison to previous level to present level. It's not compressor/expander combo unit, I've had outboard units that do that. That would mean they would have to do it in a time domain and that gets really expensive and causes a time delay to do the comparison. So they would have to delay the video to sync up with the audio.

I found this in my not-in-use 921 manual:
• Line Mode - Select this option for the stereo audio to have the correct compression and encoding suitable for connecting to an amplifier or system with Dolby® Pro Logic decoding.
• RF Mode - Select this option for the stereo audio to be standard Left and Right only and have the correct compression suitable for connecting to a standard stereo amplifier or TV.

Listening to an MSNBC program on Steve Jobs, the Line (read Dolby) level was really low requiring volume in the 20s on my Samsung LED DLP instead of say 15.
