722k questions, connections and HDMI woes.

Alright so we finally got our Dish upgraded today to HD. 1 722k receiver, and 2 211's.

First question is does the 722k support 1080p? My TV says its 1080i when the 722k is connected, and I notice some banding/interlace lines on some channels. This is over HDMI. When I go into the HDTV setup screen on the 722k it only goes up as high as 1080i.

We have an LG 55" HDTV, with an Onkyo HT-s894 AVR and the 722k. For some reason I cannot get audio over HDMI, just video. So for now, the 722k has its HDMI connected straight to the TV's HDMI1 input. Optical out from the 722k into one of the Optical ins on my AVR. This way I get video over HDMI, audio over optical, and I get surround on channels that support 5.1.

Im sure my AVR supports audio over HDMI as well, but I dont know whats going on. The current method I have works fine at least, but it requires a few more clicks on the various remotes to switch inputs etc. However Im having trouble connecting my DVD/VHS Recorder.

Its a Magnavox ZV420MW8. I connected the RCA video/audio cables from the 722k's TV2 outputs, into the inputs of the Recorder. The outputs of the recorder go into the RCA inputs on the back of my LG TV.

I can watch DVDs from the recorder fine, as well as receive audio out from the digital SPDIf which goes into my AVR (has 2 SPDif inputs). But Im not getting any video from the 722k. Only audio.

The 722k is setup in Dual mode. We have no plans to use 2 seperate TVs, as the other TVs have their own receivers.

So how can I get video from the 722k into the recorder? What I need is to record whatever Im watching on the 722k. No need for fancy setups to record 1 program while watching another.

Other than PPV movies, there are no regular 1080p channels. They are all broadcast in 720p or 1080i.

There should be a menu setting on you Onkyo to enable/disable audio over HDMI.

Are you sure you are using using the yellow composite connection to your DVD AND that it's coming from TV1 composites?

If you are not hooked to TV2, you're better off in single mode.

Yep, yellow composite video out to video in, then video out again to the TV (722k>DVDrec>TV). Same for the audio connections. Red/white out from 722k into red/white ins on the DVD recorder.

The DVD recorder also has component out (no in unfortunetly). I suppose I could use the outs on those to the component in on the TV for better playback quality on the DVD unit.

Im gonna look into the AVR menu and see if something has to be enabled.

Yep, you were right. Took a while to fine, but audio for the HDMI input was off by default. Plugged HDMI out from the 722k into 1 of the 2 HDMI ins on the AVR. Had to assign things to inputs etc, but I'm getting video and audio from my AVR to the TV via the 722k.

Only problem now is how to get the optical out from my TV to use my AVR. I had it working, so I could use my AVR to watch Netflix thru the Netflix app on my TV.

Just continue to use the optical from the 722 to your AVR. It works just fine and is alive even when you are using HDMI, as afar as I know.... Your TV is NOT going to give you 5.1 in the out jack. When you are using the AVR, you want to set your TV sound to '0' or you will have an echo chamber.

It should continue to work with Netflix assuming that you've chosen your TV originated viewing setup on the AVR (the one that takes audio input from the appropriate optical port).

Your TV is NOT going to give you 5.1 in the out jack.
It will on TV originated multichannel content (TV tuner, Netflix). It just won't pass externally generated 5.1 audio (DVR, DVD/Blu-ray).

It is probably best not to have multiple audio pathways set up so there's no situation where you get sound but not picture.

Netflix I dont think offers 5.1, but Vudu, another app that comes on my TV does I believe.

Anyway I figured it out. Reading the manual actually helps. I had to assign digital inputs to outputs on the receiver. For the 722k, HDMI is enabled over Video 1. Video 2 is assigned the optical from my TV to the AVR for Netflix etc.

The DVD recorder is still being a pain. So I switched to Single Mode by pressing the mode button on the 722k. I have TV2 outs into the ins of the recorder. The recorder has component out, so I hooked that up to the AVR component ins, and the AVR component out to the component ins on the TV. This way I get a much clearer picture than using the composite cable.

I can play back DVDs from it, but I get no picture from the 722k. I can hear audio from the 722k though, so its passing something thru.

Anyone have a DVD recorder with their 722k? How do you connect to it?

Ok so TV1 instead of TV2. Will play with it over the weekend. Right now I just wanna enjoy the Hd. Been going crosseyed over all these wiring configurations. :)

Ok I got it working. TV1 is indeed what to use. I had something confused with my AVR. I plugged in the 722 into my Recorder, and used component out from the rec into the ins on my AVR, then Component out from AVR to TV. Was able to record from the TV just fine. However its a hassle to switch. I have to use the TV remote to switch over to Component to get video, use the recorder remote to turn it on and operate, and use the AVR remote to switch to video 3.

Wish my TV would output 5.1 thru its optical out for everything instead of reserving it for the few apps that enable 5.1 out (Vudu). This way I could hook everything up to the TV, use the awesome onscreen input guide to switch, and just hook up an optical from the TV to the AVR, and thats it.

Im so getting a Harmony Remote tomorrow.

Alright, this might be a dumb question, but why are you bothering with a DVD recorder? Everything you record to it will be SD quality. You have up to 50 hours of HD space on your 722k, and much more than that if you add an EHD.

Harmony remote is the ONLY way to go now a days...

Bought the 650 today. Indeed it is the way to go. Have all my activities setup. Being able to switch from DVR to DVD Recorder to Bluray to Radio with 1 button is pretty damn cool.

You may play around with running the component from the 722, and component from the TV to your onkyo, and then use the component out the supply the signal to your DVD recorder.
