Special One-Night CE for 9/15 -- No Weekend CE's

I've had a couple of issues with 0559. The first one may not be related to the update, but my recordings of Rizzoli % Isles are corrupted. They only play anywhere from a few minutes to half of the episode. Also, when watching a recorded sd program, using the ff makes the picture go into stretch mode. If I am watching live tv and use the back button, then ff, it does the same thing. This is on my HR24-500 only, not my HR20-700.

I only have 559 on 2 out of 3 receivers (the DVR is on 552).

I'm glad I didn't do them all, this is a problematic CE. The two on 559 both come on to black screens. Sometimes CC will turn itself on, and for the most part, there are no show stoppers in 552, but I cant say that with 559. MRV is also broken, but that could just be an incompatibility between the server (CE ver 552) and the clients (CE ver 559). I've also seen some reports of trick play issues (video reverting into small window in upper corner, or aspect ratio changing).

I'm going to NOT put the two receivers on this CE into standby. If I leave them on 24/7, maybe they won't turn on to black screens.

It's good this experimental build was only available for 1 night and not at the usual time.

All my units are on the current CE without any video or MRV issues. Didn't have any old recording to test that. Trick play is not something I use, but if someone can tell me how to test it, I will.

Nope, I sleep with mine on, and when I woke up this morning it was black screen.

And the MRV issue isn't to do with incompatible client/server versions. I have 559 on both my servers and my H24 and it does the 'preview window' thing (I just reported it a couple posts ago, I noticed it last night)

I want to provide my feedback for this version to keep up my end of the deal. Please read and take these enhancement requests into serious consideration DirecTV.

I believe it is the attention to small details that can really make a product shine and rise above the competition. I'd like to see DirecTV adopt this belief as well.

The Guide and List menus:
1) Move all of the content that is left justified (channel numbers, preview box, etc) further to the left. It should be the same distance from from the left edge as the preview box is now to the top edge.
2) Decrease the font size slightly and reduce the boldness of the font everywhere in the guide except the top right corner. The title and description of the currently highlighted program needs this the most, so that more words in the description can fit on the screen.
3) Slide the title and the description of the highlighted program up to line up with the top of the preview window. (The Smart Search, TVMail, and other screens got this right.)
4) Add more rows of channels to the list by moving the bottom bar that contains the red, green, and yellow circles down, removing the pointless bar that is currently there. Then move the bar that lists the date and times up closer to the preview window. Slightly decreasing the font size could also help here.
5) If you must include artwork for the currently highlighted program, it should be right justified to line up with the info at the top right.

I think the little Info screen at the top (press Info when no other UI element is on screen) is quite nice. The font size is about right (maybe doesn't need to be as bold), though it could take up slightly less vertical space.

The UI element that appears when you pause a show is quite nice as well. Again, could take up slightly less vertical space, but the font size and boldness looks great.

Random:
1) I'd like to see more animations.
2) There should be some visual que (an animating loading symbol or something) after you press a button and it lags while processing the request. Currently, nothing is displayed on the screen that lets the user know that it's working, so the user thinks they didn't press the button or it's not working.
3) The screen saver is small and cute, but does not move in a fluid motion; it is jittery.
4) It may be wise to add more than 1.5 hours of program titles into the views.

My suggestions for the future:
1) DirecTV's next generation of receivers need to have built-in WiFi.
2) The next UI enhancement could see transparency effects and beautiful animations.
3) Something must be done to make fast forwarding, rewinding, and skipping easier to use and more efficient.
4) Bring some new cool features that will really enhance the whole DirecTV experience. I'd like to see more interaction with mobile devices - controlling the receiver with an iPhone app, watch shows on the iPhone and iPad, stream content among devices, etc.
5) Don't be afraid to implement major changes - especially on the UI.

I strongly believe this new GUI is a big step in the right direction. I love the black and blue color theme. Props to DirecTV for making the software perform better, in addition to making it look much nicer, without having to purchase the latest hardware. Great job and congrats to DirecTV!

Please feel free to comment on any of the above suggestions. I'd love to hear your thoughts concerning these matters.

I think animations take up RAM resources; I think the same for "posters" and I wish those types of things would go away unless the next gens are beefier.

In respect to apps that can control the receivers; don't we have that; I have it on my Android devices.

Streaming would be great however as well as backing up to HDD or DVD like the ReplayTVs (which DirecTV now owns all those patents) did.

I think like MRV, streaming and built-in WiFi will be a thorn in their side since you can't predict a user's network or force a user's network to be a standard.

4) Add more rows of channels to the list by moving the bottom bar that contains the red, green, and yellow circles down, removing the pointless bar that is currently there. Then move the bar that lists the date and times up closer to the preview window. Slightly decreasing the font size could also help here.

No need to sacrifice readability to squeeze more channels in. The more stuff they squeeze into the page, the larger the TV needed to keep it comfortable to read. Now imagine all those poor SDTV folks who can barely read it as is.

1) I'd like to see more animations.
No. Animations are dumb. They do nothing but eat up system resources.

2) There should be some visual que (an animating loading symbol or something) after you press a button and it lags while processing the request. Currently, nothing is displayed on the screen that lets the user know that it's working, so the user thinks they didn't press the button or it's not working.
I can't figure out what lag you're referring to. If you're talking about the partial second that it takes to load the guide/list, that's a bit ridiculous. And there actually already is a visual cue: the power light blinks when it receives a command from the remote.

4) It may be wise to add more than 1.5 hours of program titles into the views.
They've already said they aren't going past 1.5 hours. Having used Dish's 3 hour guide, it's cluttered and hard to read. When I had Dish I kept it on the 4x1.5hr setting.

1) DirecTV's next generation of receivers need to have built-in WiFi.
No they don't. They have DECA to talk to each other and the internet, and that's all they need. If you need wifi to connect to the internet, then you buy the wifi bridge. Only a small percentage would use it (not to mention it would only be necessary for one unit per system to have it enabled), and to most it would be a useless feature that adds unnecessary hardware expense to the unit.

2) The next UI enhancement could see transparency effects and beautiful animations.
Again, animations are a dumb waste of limited resources. Not needed, not wanted.

3) Something must be done to make fast forwarding, rewinding, and skipping easier to use and more efficient.
Again, not sure what you mean here. If you're implying that they 'tag' commercials for easy skipping, it will never happen. ReplayTV got sued over that years ago. If you don't like the 'Slip" forward, you can change it to skip 30 seconds each press.

4) Bring some new cool features that will really enhance the whole DirecTV experience. I'd like to see more interaction with mobile devices - controlling the receiver with an iPhone app, watch shows on the iPhone and iPad, stream content among devices, etc.
It has been revealed that this is already being toyed with.

Streaming would be great however as well as backing up to HDD or DVD like the ReplayTVs (which DirecTV now owns all those patents) did.

Backing up to HDD would be nice, but not as nice as allowing simultaneous use of the internal and an external HDD. DVD will never happen.

are all you guys having these issues on the same box version? mine are running like champs (see sig) you should list your gear in the sig so we can all keep track of them regarding issues like these

JerseyMatt,
I should have mentioned that most of my suggestions should be optional.

You act as if things have to be the way that you like them. Everyone has different preferences so DirecTV should let us personalize it to the way that we like. If your TV is small and it's hard to read the text, change it. Disable the animations if you don't care for them. But they still need to give us those options. I have a big TV and the font is too big in my opinion. I want to see more rows of channels so I don't have to push the button 50 times to find a good show.

Yes, I am an Apple fan and this is what they do. They make their software gorgeous and useful, but if you don't like it you can change it. Why can't DirecTV do that too?

And no, I will argue that the receivers do need built in WiFi. I will not purchase an adapter for something that every other company has it built in (Apple TV, blu-ray players, Xbox 360, even TVs). If they expect us to use their OnDemand and YouTube services, they better provide an easy way to connect to the Internet. I have very reliable WiFi and that is the ONLY way I connect to the Internet on all of my devices. I will NOT string out an Ethernet cable across my living room to plug in my DirecTV box. So I never get to use the Internet features. And it appears that is where the future of DirecTV is heading, they introduced YouTube and TV Apps and a lot of others that all require Internet. So yes, they do need WiFi built in.

You missed the point of the animations chewing up resources. They have to be allocated for whether the user has them on or not. And that allocation takes resources away from other aspects of the UI. Animations are pure fluff and do nothing to help functionality. And for the guide, 6 lines is the standard. Pretty much all other provider's guides have 6 lines or less. Adding even 2 lines isn't going to make any sort of dramatic difference in the number of button presses to page through the entire guide. You're talking what, 40 presses versus 50?

Yes, I am an Apple fan and this is what they do. They make their software gorgeous and useful, but if you don't like it you can change it. Why can't DirecTV do that too?
Apple also charges way too much for their stuff. They charge a premium on their image, and people are gullible enough to pay it.

And no, I will argue that the receivers do need built in WiFi. I will not purchase an adapter for something that every other company has it built in (Apple TV, blu-ray players, Xbox 360, even TVs). No, sorry, they DON'T need built in wifi. You don't need to string ethernet across your living room. The system only needs one connection to the internet (so why should ALL boxes be wifi capable?), and it can tie into the coaxial line ANYWHERE in the system, it doesn't need to be at a receiver. And your examples don't hold water, because the 360, most BluRay players, STB's, and app-ready TVs DO NOT have wifi built in. They have ethernet jacks, and if you want wifi, you pay for their little dongle. Reason? Wifi stinks for video delivery. It's a 'last resort', and they don't want people using it as the default. You do realize that each device you connect to Wifi reduces the bandwidth available to each device, right? If you want your system connected via wifi, buy the adapter.

Sorry JerseyMatt. I think it is very foolish for any company to not innovate. That is what you are encouraging, since not adding built in WiFi and not making it a beautiful and enjoyable user experience is definitely not innovative. Everyone needs to follow in Apple's steps. They simply make their products easy to use and beautiful. So if animations need more power to work, make the receivers more powerful! (They need to do this anyways!) And they need to have an easy way to access the Internet. Built in WiFi is way way easy and every other company is doing it or has plans to. No, it may not be the best, since there are downsides to using wireless Internet. Who cares? There are a lot of people that would love built in WiFi simply because it is very easy to set up. Why do companies who make blu-ray players brag that one of the features is built-in WiFi? The Ethernet port is there for those who want to use that instead.

Concerning the number of rows, anything to encourage less button pressing should be implemented without a doubt! For my TV, it's not going to make it hard to read. And who cares if the competition also has 6 lines? They need to rise above the competition and outdo them.

Yes, you are right. Apple does charge a lot for their products. And people are willing to pay that much it because it is easy to use and beautiful and will be a wonderful user experience. And they know Apple will always keep their products up to date with new features and innovation via free software updates. Yes, DirecTV is taking a step in the right direction. I'm glad they are giving this update to us users for free. But they can also see improvement.

What I would like to see is an optional guide that uses the font size that is used in the left column of the On Demand main screen (I think I stole this idea from someone else here). Then, shrink down the other elements (mainly the height and width of the rectangles, but there are other places that could be shrunken down) of the guide to fit the smaller font size, and then see how many 30-minute time blocks can fit on the screen - with the current font, only three such blocks are displayed. I am guessing, but could be wrong, that at least two more blocks could fit, ideally three more. Once again, make this denser guide an option.
