If I have a 722k, and 2 - 222k's and am on the top 200 pkg, can I just hang a external hd on my 722k without any activation fee?
Also, does it have to be one that has its own separate power supply?

I've got an old 36 gig WD drive doing nothing in my office, and, thought I would hang it on the 722 just to check out that feature; it does not have its own power supply, it gets its power via its usb cable..

thanks!

I have a question about EHDs. Two of my receivers--my 612 and 722k sit close to one another. Would it be possible to attach an EHD to a hub and attach it to both receivers? or is that asking for trouble?

If you mean to leave both receivers on simultaneously with write access to a single disk, that is the recipe for file system corruption. I wouldn't even try it; it would be a miracle if it worked for long, and you would never know when one receiver or the other would blow away the whole thing.

and, since I believe you can share the EHD on both of those units, why risk killing the EHD? Just unplug it from one receiver when you want to use it on the other one!

That is what I meant. I was just sort of curious. Since the receivers are in close proximity to one another, it would allow me to sort of have whole house functionality.

Yes, I could do that, but since the receivers are in a cabinet, unplugging and replugging are a pain (or I am lazy :D). I was just sort of curious, anyway.

You can use the front USB sockets with a cord from the EHD. Just a little ugly and watch out for the door hinges.
I have 11 drives using 8 jacks and 2 722s so I have a big mess of cords and supplies.

Here is a link for all the requirements for the EHD. EHD

Dish needs to add a list of "external hard drives that are or are not compatible with their receivers" to this page. I recently purchased the Samsung Story 1TB drive and spent 1 hour with technical support trying to recognize and format the drive only to find out that the drive is not compatible. The technical support person checked with another department and read off a list of compatible drives. Why did it take 1 hour to find this out? Why not add the list to their web site? I informed the person handling the problem that people usually have to pay a restocking fee to return the drive once it was opened which could have been avoided if Dish had the list on their web site. The support person was nice enough to waive the DVR activation fee for the inconvenience.

There is not a list that we have of compatible drives. As long as it meets those requirements on that page the drive should work, if it does not meet those requirements it probably will not work. If it does meet the requirements and doesn't work please PM the information and I can look in to it.
