My father got Dish Network last year. He had a VIP 222k installed in July 2010. The reciever has not received a firmware update in that time. It is still stuck on L398. I tried doing a check switch and pulling the plug but nothing is working to get the latest firmware. Anyone have any suggestions?

Whoa. L5.92 is current. What sats can the receiver "see"? You can do this with a Check Switch or else Menu 6-1-3.

Well according to their list of updates, they still consider L398 as "current" even though it was released way back in April. The next one, L590, is the one with the new menu updates. (I don't know why there's a huge jump with the version numbers.) But you would think by now, since there isn't as many 222ks out there that you would think all of them would be at least on L590 by now. https://rweb.dishnetwork.com/departmental_content/TechPortal/content/tech/softwarelist.asp

L3.98 is a current and supported version. The receiver will take any software updates nightly if they are available.

Current versions for the 222K:

L5.92
L5.90
L3.98

I wanted L592 for the sound leveling. My father complains about the loud commercials. My concern was the fact that it has not gotten an update in a year's time. Is this normal and should be expected?

L3.98 was released in April, and is a current version. This is normal, we normally release software by the receiver number, so it can take sometime to get the absolute latest version

If it makes you feel any better, the sound leveling is (IMO) pretty crummy and even though both of my 722Ks had it on by default I actually turned it off. It might work OK for TV speakers, but for good quality sound systems it really muffles everything.
