The league is close to renewing TV deals with all of its broadcast partners that will result in massive rights fee increases of more than 60 percent across the board, underscoring the unrivaled strength of NFL programming. For the first time, each of the broadcast networks will pay an annual average of at least $1 billion for the rights to carry NFL games. The expected windfall from CBS, Fox and NBC will be worth more than a combined $24 billion over the next eight years. Sources expect the deals extending through the 2021 season to be finalized this month, though a formal announcement may come later. The broadcasters’ current deals end after the 2013 season.

This is one thing I don't get about the NFL... you have a NFL HD CHANNEL!!! But it is hardly used???

But keep it on these channels anyway and off ESPN - leave ESPN for CFB!

The NFL is on ESPN because ESPN wants the NFL. Badly.

Ugg that would drive prices up sky high for content thru providers of the sat co's... since I think already they are charging the most per customer than any other network.

Best to leave it where its at on the networks for OTA

Don't hold your breath on that. From the OP's linked article:

As part of the broadcast agreements, the league has the right to hold back more games from CBS and Fox. It’s believed that the league will use those games to create an early-season eight-week package on Thursday nights. The league is expected to shop that package to cable networks next year.

The NFL already renewed MNF through 2021. As for the NFL Network, I agree that there really is no point on having it if there's no programming on it. Heck, the NFL is probably not making any money on it and now they want to sell the Thursday night package that's on that channel to another network. At this point, I don't see the NFL network lasting much longer (it's still not even on TWC and Bright House systems yet)

The NFL is the weakest (IMO) of the 4 "sports" channels (NBA, NHL, MLB, NFL)

MLB is the best with NHL close 2nd :)

I agree MLB is the best, but do you like NHL Network? What do you like about it?

Personally I think it's awful. By far the weakest of the four sports networks.

NHL on the Fly (love the whip-around)
classic games and series on there too (especially offseason)

I dont watch the NBA channel so dont know much about it. Saw they had a 30 minute program "last night of the ABA" which I did watch but it was pretty lame.
NFL Net is honestly pathetic. I mean how many times can we see the top 10 gaffs or the top 10 weather games? I know there have been threads about their lack of programming. Even on Turkey Day they decided to show a "classic" game from past Turkey Days....and guess what one they showed? Yep....Dallas/Miami (aka Leon Lett boner II)
How many better games on Turkey Day could they have chosen? Heck that game wasnt that good. It was one play

I'm not positive on this but I think they want to keep the current package on NFL net and create another 8 game package for the 1st 8weeks of the season to sell to CBS Sports or NBC Sports, TNT whoever.

You hit the nail on the head Iceberg. MLB Network does a fantastic job both during the season and in the offseason. I watched some of there Hot Stove show today and I thought it was good. I dont watch enough NHL Network so I dont know about that. Same goes with NBA TV. You know my feelings about NFL Network. I'll be honest, I have been watching the NFL Top 10 a lot. Probably because there is nothing else that they offer. And your right about Miami/Dallas. NFL Network will tell you they showed it because both teams were playing each other on Turkey Day. They showed that game last year. NFL Network showed a classic game. Well, they wont get a parade by me. First, they show a game that they showed already. And second, they showed the game at 12:30 am at night with no replays!! How is anybody supposed to see the game?

They might as well combine those 2 8-game packages into a full 16-game package then and just sell that. If they do that though, I'd prefer those games to be on Friday or Saturday. To me Thursday is just too early for the teams (except Thanksgiving of course)

While I agree the NFL Network does not have enough programming, it should be noted the 'America's Game' series on the network is absolutely fantastic.

I'm fine with keeping more NFL off espn, but ESPN has screwed up CFB enough, a lot of CFB needs to get off espn..
Not sure why you're against ESPN's NCAA coverage, I think they do a fine job. Plus, with all the big games, along with a lot of others, that's not happening any time soon:

2011-12 bowl schedule - ESPN

This will be much better than FOX's coverage, who never had a college game all season until the BCS games came along....

I don't believe espn's monopoly is good for the game. Like putting the fcs games on espn3 and pretty much holding the viewers in Montana hostage as only 1 isp in the state carried espn 3. espn only wants to promote their own agenda during games. I am getting tired of trying to watch Big 12 games and Musburger and Herbstreit yammer on and on about the sec instead of giving us the play by play and whats going on in Big 12, the conference that they are broadcasting. I know what the bowl schedule is. I don't like that espn has all but 2 bowl games. That monopoly leads to a lot of favoritism.

I like that the NFL spreads it around to several networks and alternates the hosts of the superbowl between them. Leads to a variety of different viewpoints and analysis.

Agreed. Better to have a sport (whether it's college or professional) being broadcasted on different networks that are owned by completely different media conglomerates.:bounce

The NFL negotiates its television contracts as a whole. Each individual conference in college negotiates their own television contracts. They are all afraid that if they don't have some kind of deal with ESPN, they will not receive any coverage, ie... the MWC. They are afraid of out of out of sight out of mind.
