They point I was making is that it is already against the law as doing such an act (talking on the phone) is a distraction for many in many driving situations. We do not need to add another law. Some people, like myself, are perfectly capable of talking on the phone on a hands free device without it being a distraction.

There are some drivers that cannot even talk to a passenger while driving, thus a distraction to them. If they get in a crash as a result of simply talking to the passenger in the same car, they are at fault. Should talking to passengers then be banned as well because some may be distracted by it?

Obviously, you and many others here are against any law that will regulate your lives. In this case, it's not about you, it's about the many. And concentrating to purposefully use a phone is much different than daydreaming, chatting, or reading signs, or checking out HiFi's woman!! ;)

There are just too many people out there who are dialing, talking, and texting, that it's become a hazard to others on the road. You may be perfectly fine talking and driving, it's the others that I personally am worried about. I worry about the safety of my wife and kids, while some idiot is not paying attention and hurts them. As someone mentioned earlier, this is similar to drinking and driving. Way back when, there were fewer cars on the road, fewer drinkers driving, and fewer victims driving, now there are too many to ignore, and they had to change the laws.

Here is a British PSA about this -

I'm sure many here will say it's propaganda and extreme, but unfortunately it's a distinct possiblilty, and it grows larger every day, as more and more people drive distracted.

I have no problem with some law against Texting or non hands free with a cell phone. In these two cases both hands are not on the wheel and the one hand that isn't on the wheel is most like doing something it shouldn't.But for hands Free I'm all against a law on that.Sure! the chances of a distraction from someone chatting on a hands free will go up but so would any other chatting in the car, radio, singing, etc.I'm just guessing that many of the car accidents with involving a cell phone are texting problems and just chatting with someone else with a hands free (Both hands on the wheel and visual on the driving) would probably be alot lower and on the same page as chatting with someone else in the car which should be outlawed if hands free goes that way.

Let's just outlaw cars entirely. As far as methods to kill people, cars are pretty close to the top of the list.

Now THAT's a good argument point!

If you can't be inconvenienced to stop your car to make a call, well then don't call, or don't drive. Your choice. SEE, you STILL have a choice.

Hell, before 10 years ago, what did you do if you had to make a phone call while you were driving? You stopped the car, got out, found a phone and made a call.

WOW! What a concept.....

I would agree with this also. BUT, you must be able to dial hands free also, voice activation or something. I've seen many people fumbling with their phones just trying to find SAlly's number in the list before they dial it, with NO EYES on the road.

Agreed!! I make my calls before i start driving and then talk as i drive! If i do get a call when driving its just a mater of pressing a button on the wheel. Here I'm using common and safe sense which some don't do and me and many others will end up paying for the few who don't use common sense. One other thing! If Hands off does become illegal!how long will it be before Most if not all GPS systems get illegal while driving also_One thing the GPS manufactures can do is blank out the display while car is in motion leaving the audio only.

First off, Well said yaz96.

Let me say this as plain and simple as I can.. If passing some new regulatory law against the use of a cell phone while driving save lives, I am all for it.

I am so sorry it will inconvenience many of you. For those that believe this is just another way for the government to control us, well, pick a better issue. This not a good example.

If everyone stayed home and never went out that would save lives. Many laws are good but some i think are a waste of time.Im standing with my opinion that hands free is safe when used with common sence and shouldnt be outlawed.

Would you apply the same standards to everything? I mean the government can regulate everything from what you can eat, when you must sleep, to how many hours you must exercise all in the name of saving lives. Wouldn't you rather have freedom of choice vs a government mother controlling your behavior?

ETA: Not allowing music to be played and not allowing conversations in a car will also decrease driver detraction on the average, thus saving more lives. Should we also ban these two things as well?
