My contract is set to expire with a few days here, and I currently have the 722k DVR. I would like to the new Hopper/Joey set up in my next round with Dish, but am wondering about the best way to go about getting that done. My best guess (but why I am seeking guidance) is that leverage will be at its best when my contract expires and I can threaten to leave? Would it be possible to negotiate with retention to get upgraded for free?

Could I also talk them into some movie channels? This is my first go around negotiating a new contract. Just trying to get the most I can when I have the options.

Thank you.

Will they let me know what I am getting, etc before scheduling...I guess I assumed that if I got to retentions I could get more?

Dish retentions isn't known for doing much. The offers from the DIRT members will probably be the best you are going to get.

edit Yes they will let you know everything that you will be getting.

Cancel and come back as a new customer in 3 months.
Exspecialy if want any chance at getting it all for free.

Someone reported they got a free Hopper-Joey install from Retention, but more have reported null results. Neither Dish nor Direct really care whether they retain you or not which is why many churn back and forth between providers every couple years. You can ask for the moon, but don't be surprised if you are offered very little. They'll give nearly everyone some free movie premiums for three months especially if you haven't recently had them under a free offer.

Most of such problems are install problems, which self correct over time as experience is gained.

From what I'm reading, more people are happy with what they've gained than those with problems.

Actually the Hopper/joey overall seems to be working quite well judging from overall posts. Yes, there are some bugs, but perhaps less than many would have thought. You have to separate what people thought, wished, or want the system to do, from what is meant to do and how it does it. And just as navychop said, sometimes you have to ignore the first day posts of someone. If you dig a little deeper often the problem goes away by the next day, or it was a mistake on the part of the poster in using the equipment, or not understanding how it works. I will also point out a software update is supposed to start this week, and if it goes well be sent to everyone. It is often in most every item I buy now that can receive updates, to get one or more right after it comes out to fix or change something.
We are much more critical about equipment than most will be. That's good because it points out true things that can be fixed or made better. But it can appear like it's a major problem when it's not always.

With all the problems I have read on this site...I am not sure why you want the hopper/Joey?

Do you have the new system? I am very happy with mine. Its pretty awesome. I also installed it so I have very little problems. Only hiccup was dlna, which was fixed using a HIC.

Its funny how they won't make an offer for a customer out of contract like those offered to a new customer. Its also odd that customers who cancel seem to get a offer within the month to come back. The problem with that is most people already have another provider installed.

yep, exactly what happened to us, canceled and within a week got letter saying they would do "almost anything" to get me to reactivate, lol. Why did they not do that while I was still a customer? I am happy with fios, and even though I have no contract, I am not going to go through another switch so soon, not that their offer was even that good.
