DISH Enters Deal with ROKU

Yep sort of seen something like this coming.Knew there was something afoot when dish started offering free roku players to customers that complained about losing the AMC suite.I would almost bet there will be more to come. Not sure roku fans will like Dish having exclusivity on foreign content, and possibly more in the future.

Can't believe the ROKU people want to see this happen! Guess everybody has their price.

Even though international programming is not something I watch, its the thought of controlling available programming which stinks! It's kind of reminiscent of the days of radio company consolidation, and look what happened to THAT industry!

The beauty of ROKU has been how open it has been to programming being ADDED. Shame on you, DISH! Afraid of competition?
Gotta have control all the time, don't ya? Big ROKU fan here, but touch anything else in available programming on my little black box, and I'll be gone! (Not that dish would care.)

Bigger is NOT better in all cases. ROKU/DISH included.

Yes, I feel better.

For how long? DISH might claim and exclusive on that as well. :(

I am just waiting for the press release saying that DISH has aquired ROKU.

IF that happens I expect all free content and access will go bye bye, making the roku the internet way of getting DISH . I can see them providing their entire service over the internet using roku. But then again this may be the way DISH finally achieves ala-carte.

I was thinking the same thing. i watch my roku alot and i don't want those free movie channels taken away.

Dish boxes can work over the Internet now, I don't think they need Roku boxes.

But it sure seems like we're waiting on the other shoe to drop.

Yup... there was a lot of speculation when dish started throwing these at customers. This will probably be an upgrade to their "TV everywhere" idea. Sling is cool, but you could truck the roku anywhere and use it seamlessly with just an internet connection and not have to worry about things being properly setup at home.

Maybe they will call it DishGO...lol

IF DISH wanted to sell their main channels ,not just international channels, they could use roku to do so. They could buy Roku and sell DISH to those who don't have access to satellite ,due to look angles. Imagine they could be the first internet delivered cable company. DISH could even sell their channels ala carte as their gimmick to get those to use their service. They already use it for international channels , why not for the regular channels and let the sub pick which ones they want to. I do remember reading somewhere that DISH was looking to do this very thing , and Roku could be that vehicle. Either by DISH buying Roku or just partnering with them.

I figured something like this would happen. Dish takes everything cool and destroys it. Pocketdish, sling, blockbuster, now possibly roku. :-( Guess we wait and see.

Horrendous. Roku just sold out. International programming is the main if not only reason I even have a Roku. I guess the free streams had to end sometime, and I'm betting you have not heard the last of this. Someone is going to add internationals to another streaming box, and then tout they are free.
The only upside, maybe, is if Dish gives us at a reasonable price some of the internationals that now require programming packages. If I could get the International News Pack or World Pack without any other requirements that might pacify me a little. But there is ton of international programming on Roku that is going to be wiped out.
