DISH Enters Deal with ROKU

I wonder if dish is trying to get patents on names such as Droku?:D

Fortunately, even if Dish does buy out roku there will still be quite a few streaming options left.PS3,Boxee,WDTV,Googletv,think Ubuntu is going to release their own iptv offering.

AFAIK, Netflix has a big stake in Roku, or at least they did. If they still do, then Dish probably won't be buying Roku anytime soon, unless they figure out a way to partner with Netflix.

I do hope they don't acquire Roku. Dish did basically destroy Sling. And, their stewardship of BB hasn't exactly inspired confidence. OTOH, A partnership with Roku, Netflix, and other streaming content providers might be interesting, and serve the public well.

Incorporating ROKU-like features into the Joey has long been a hot topic.

I must have missed that thread. Anyhow, I was thinking that it would be great the other way around: incorporate Joey features in the Rokus, but without the $7/mo cost. :D

It could if Dish ends up owning Roku and changes the direction of it. But you can believe someone else will provide much of what Roku did if that happens.

Were Dish about to trash your Rokus like that, can you prevent it from updating?

But I'm the one who's going to have to deal with the wife when her Korean soap operas suddenly disappear. That's likely to end up more like the ending to Salome...with my head on a platter!

That said are their streaming units like Roku that we can stream foreign news. I have google tv. It's limited. Boxee box does not work well for me.
Any suggestions?

Well many of us said there may be more to this when roku's were part of retention with AMC I guess I will take a wait and see approach to what the future has with roku/dish.

Remember when sirius merged with XM?
We all thought we were going to get more?
In fact some of the best XM programming was axed.
Not the same service anymore. That's my take.

Dish sending these Roku units out with a determined plan.
Am I after dish on this. Absolutely.
Did Roku sell out Absolutely.

Who loses? We do.

Roku can turn off any programming it wants. Also you must subscribe to Roku in order to get any streams.

Apple tv is suppose to get an update to ios 6 which will lead to more streaming programs.

If apple tv doe upgrade the ITV will become a reality.

So a developer followed up on that Roku forums thread and said that he did get written permission from Roku and DishIPTV so long as his channel did not stream Live Linear TV. He could still do foreign VOD for example. So there goes my BBC World Service and NHK World streams.

I have a "Feeling" that Roku was really starting to cut into Dish's bottom line on International channels and were prolly given the choice of "cash" or a lawsuit for "unauthorized international channels" (The really good private ones BBC,ITV etc)

Overeactions as usual here. This is how business works. You can't tell me if you were Dish or Roku that you wouldn't have done it. What business is out there just doing things to please customers and not trying to make much money or benefit themselves, except for Scott and SatelliteGuys of course. ;)

It is business. I believe something along these lines probably was going to happen at sometime. It's more about losing yet another way to get some programming you want, that is not being offered anywhere, or most anywhere. Hopefully if this shakes out as it appears and we do lose the channels, they will show up somewhere else, in some other form.

I am not overreacting, I for one am just concerned given their history with taking over companies in the past as I mentioned in a previous post. pocketdish, sling, blockbuster, does not build confidence. Just a waiting game at this point, we all knew something was in the works. Like I said before, Charlie always has something up his sleeve. :)

Except Apple wrote the book on locking down platforms and restricting content.

STBs is one area Apple has been spanked handily and multiple times, AppleTV comes across as a side project of 4 guys in Cupertino.

With over 100 million competing units out there it's not a market that is very susceptible to their 'it just works' magic when so many things already do, and in most cases and for most people work better/provide a better value.
