Anyone using this? It looks like a great idea, but I'm wondering how well it works in actual world. If it works like it says, it would allow me to sit out on my screen porch and watch TV without having to install a TV out there. Or I could download a couple shows onto my tablet and watch them on long trips.

Once you pay the $99 for the unit, does it add anything to your monthly bill?

GenieGo is the new name for the Nomad.
Once you buy it, there is no additional fee.
In home Streaming works great, as do downloaded shows.
They are currently working on Out Of Home streaming for it. Once that is released it will allow you to watch (via Streaming) your recordings anywhere that you can connect to a wifi network.
You have to have an HD-DVR connected to the internet in order for it to work. The GenieGo itself plugs into your router via an ethernet cable, so you have to have an open ethernet port on your router.

Does the Genie Go let you stream in HD? Or is it SD only? Once they figure out how to let you stream it from anywhere it will be close to the Sling feature for *E

Just bought mine last week.
I wanted to use with my iPad.
First, there is no official app for an iPad.
You have to use the nomad iPhone app.
I did both streaming and downloaded movies.
As mentioned above you must be tied into home network for streaming to work.
But you can down load movies on to your portable device.

I have to say I'm not impressed with the video
Quality. It's choppy and it pulsates.

Cannot compare to hopper wit sling.

I got one last week, installation was a breeze and im actually happy with it. It works good with both my Ipad and Iphone5 on a wifi enviroment in my home.

I kind of miss not having the streaming option like I did when I had sling on my Dish. But when I actually think of how much my cell provider rips me off whenever I use data, the sling was pretty much useless to me anyways

I think if you're looking for the ability to stream live TV to your iPad in the house, I'd start with the free DIRECTV App for iPad. There are a lot of channels that will do live streaming. GenieGo probably won't do true live streaming, in other words streaming of live TV, probably not ever. But it does give you access to your playlist with just a few second delay.

Where this product really shines is as you said, downloading programs to it. I'll admit it takes a little planning since it takes about 105% of the program time to do it. In other words, a 60 minute program takes about 63 minutes to transcode and download. If you're planning a trip it will take all night (and then some) to get 15-18 hours of programming done.

However, you can set up auto-transcodes, which are like series links in a way, they pre-transcode particular shows when they come up on your DVR. That makes it a lot easier.

Once the content is on the iPad, it doesn't matter that you're using a scaled iPhone app, you get the maximum quality video that the thing can give you nonetheless. It really shines on planes and in hotel rooms where you would think that you'd get good wi-fi and you just don't.

I have both a GenieGo and a Slingbox, use both as needed, but I don't have an unlimited data plan so if I'm traveling the GenieGo gets the job done.
