ohioankev has stumbled onto something here. You have to at least entertain the thought that some of those "reviews" are from Network people?

I noticed the same, and was really the only common legitimate complaint. A few probably had bad hardware or installs. Most of the rest was trollish.
It has been talked about a lot here. While not a personal complaint, lack of a larger font/higher contrast UI is the reason I've told my parents to stay with their 722s.
And I can agree with that complaint. I wish it had one too.
But overall the Hopper is just superbly designed and very powerful. It takes a little getting used to the UI but is worth the effort and the switch to it.

I have had Dish DVR's since the original one. The Hopper/Joey system is the BEST BY A LONG SHOT of ALL the Dish DVR's that have been released to date (I don't have an HWS, but I digress).
I have Sling Adapters on both my hoppers, and both hoppers can see each other.
It is REALLY nice to have PTAT record all 4 networks, and when doing the Big 4 out of PTAT use the one tuner for that.

If you're looking for honest opinions about a product, especially TV, then you shouldn't look much further than this website. When looking at Amazon you'll most likely only see complaints because fewer people are willing to post positive things on there. On here you will see all kinds of different people that all have the same interests, watching TV. You may see some fan boys but you will also find constructive criticism.
I'm going to go on Amazon now and look at these negative reviews. I'm sure I'll find them comical. The positives of the Hopper outweigh the negatives by a landslide.

Be wary of reviews that don't confirm that the reviewer has effectively used the subject product. The reviews for the DIRECTV Genie are similarly mediocre and neither box deserves a lot of the strikes they're getting. The more thoughtful and thorough reviews give the Hopper ratings of over 80%.
It is also important to read the review and see if what the reviewer is crying about is actually a reasonable concern. When someone is grousing about tuner or client count limitations, they probably don't understand how a DVR is supposed to work.
Such is not to say that the Hopper has no room for fundamental improvements.
It is also important to pay attention to the nits because any one of them could be a show-stopper in a particular situation. The Sling Adapter is an example of a really cool product that has a couple of nasty show-stopper limitations. Whether those limitations are real or contrived, they can prevent the device's use in certain situations that would otherwise seem an ideal application.
Ya know, a month ago I was sitting in the Frankfurt, Germany airport watching live TV from San Francisco over my Hopper with Sling Adapter. Then I watched part of a college football game that I had recorded on the Hopper. How cool is that!
I agree, there is always room for improvement but nothing is perfect. After reading some of the reviews on there it really seems that most of the people called Dish directly and were sold the Hopper system when it really didn't fit their needs. Other complaints are because of a bad install and they need a service call.
It drives me crazy to see people complain that a product never worked from the start but a year later they have not had anything done to correct it, they just say it's a piece of crap. Get the problem fixed, then tell me if it's still crap or not.
I find it hard to believe there are too many complaints about the hopper. It is a fantastic piece of equipment. I had no ideal how much I would like PTAT.

Some channels (showtime) are available On Demand but Dish decides not to carry them or has a very limited amount of content. Which I find odd since you have to download everything using a broadband connection. When it comes to HD channels, why would anybody want to watch standard definition? You can't even use the hopper unless you have a HD television. Yet numerous channels are still SD. That I just don't understand.

Yet some people just say "Move closer to the TV or buy a new one!" I think it's a pretty legitimate complaint, considering that not everyone has 20/20 vision and HDTVs in every room. I don't have a problem with it but it would be nice to have the option. I don't like when the Hopper is missing features that the 722 had.

I haven't really ever had a problem with purchasing on Amazon. I really like it actually, especially with my Prime membership. I love 2 day shipping included. I bought my golf clubs from there and a bunch of fishing supplies.
Any source for this allegation? I also have a Prime account and never buy anything that does not qualify for free shipping or is not being sourced by Amazon directly. Are you talking about Amazon MarketPlace where other sellers link to Amazon?
