Hi All,

New to forum and did a search but didn't find what an aswer (or at least one I could understand...)

Here's the issue, we're renting a house in Oregon - Gold Beach to be exact and the owner has all of the accounts at his properties billed to his California address. According to the support I called at DirecTV we can't receive the local Oregon broadcast channels (NBC, CBS, etc...) because the account address is in Cali so therefore the only channels available are the SoCal ones which the Satellite we're pointed to obviously can't get.

I understand DirecTV using restricting local channels in order to save frequency allotment but it seems to me there ought to be a way to set the receiver here to pull the local Oregon channels from the Sat it is pointed at. I tried going into settings and changing the zip code and while it does pull up the scheduling for them I still can't get them.

Any ideas? The receiver model is H23-600

Thanks.

Welcome to the site !!!

Thats not how Locals work ...

All but 2 markets (NY and LA) are on Spot Beams, if your outside of the spot beam you won't get the local channel.

The real issue is how is it that your getting your D* service thru someone living in California ...
If this is the case then theres other issues at hand here ....

I would inquire with the Owner to see if you can get your own D* account, in witch you would get YOUR locals.
What city are you getting locals from ? LA ?

Yes, something smells here... the locals are determined by the Service Address not the Billing Address. If the owner has the system with a California service address, it looks like he might be illegally having multiple locations charged to a single account.

Thats what I was thinking too, but I'm not accusing anyone of anything without knowing the whole story.

The OP apparently has no input in this at the moment.

Thanks all.

So if I understand correctly, if someone were to have two homes, one in "A" and another in "B" they wouldn't be able to have multiple locations billed to a single account but would instead have to have a separate account for each location?

I'd assume that D* would let you put multiple locations on a single account as long as you told them about it. They'd had to received an invoice or something when the guy had the second (or third, etc...) location installed, right?

Guess ultimately it doesn't matter since he's killing it soon anyway - which is how I found the forum BTW, the FTA section. Of course now, I have to spend a bunch of time figuring out what it all means... :)

re: Jimbo - you are correct. I just rented the place and it has D* but I have no access or say so regarding the account - just trying to figure out how to watch the games.... :(

Thanks! It's a 1957 Packard (Studebaker) wagon.

That's why I said "might be.....":)

NB,
What I would do is ask the guy to turn OFF the service at that location and you can activate your own account ... remember, you will be placed in a 2 year commitment, but if you move, you can move the service with you.

Another thing you can do maybe .... how many apts are there at that location and does he supply D* for all of them ?
(btw, IF thats what he's doing, thets Account Stacking and is illegal.)

To address the other question about having service at multiple locations ... D* does typically allow this if your talking about a Home and a Cottage type of thing. (Technically, your not suppose to watch both recvrs at the same time, so they are not being used at both locations), however, if your at the Cottage and the kids are home, they are not gonna turn the home off.

It's actually pretty well that. It's a vacation rental that we decided to rent for the next year until we purchase a place (just moved here and want to get the lay of the land so to speak before pulling the trigger on a place). Now that said, I know he's got other rental properties although I have no idea what they are or if he has D* at the rest of them. I made the assumption that he did but I don't know that for a fact. Actually I've never even met or spoke to the guy, everything's handled through the RE Agent.

Edit: BTW guys, appreciate the info and explanations.

Sweet. You able to drive it pretty regular? We've got a local guy here with a late 40s Merc and he drives it all over everyday. I think he does it just to have an excuse to wrench on it.

I live in CT! When there is snow on the ground, the car stays in the garage. It's usually only April 1st to November 1st.

Gotcha ....

Ok, then if you really need Locals from the DMA your in, you'll need to try and get separate service in your name, or try setting up an antenna.

The Antenna idea may be much easier, sometimes you can get the small antenna for indoors and they will do the job, other times not.

Just to clarify. DirecTV agreements do not allow equipment to be located in one location with a service address of another. The "summer/weekend home" situation is where someone has a second home that they live in seasonally or occasionally, although this is against the terms of service DirecTV turns a blind eye to this as long as the equipment is only used by the account holder in one location at any one time. It does NOT apply to a vacation rental, which would have to be covered by a separate account.

Man oh man.... That's gotta be killin you. A Ride like that and not being able to drive it. Kinda in the same boat though. Got an e30 BMW Vert (I'll PM you a link to my thread on another forum where I've been fixing it up) and during the rainy season it stays inside which fortunately here has not been too bad this year, 2nd driest winter on record for the Oregon Coast so far but I've got a feeling that Feb and March may make up for it. Thankfully I've got a garage for it and my other baby.

Thanks and yeah, it's gonna be a moot point as he's killing the service anyway from what the RE Agent tells me. I'll most likely spend a bunch more time in the FTA sub forum and go from there. Antenna would be nice but we are in the boonies... Which is a good thing - it's why we moved here :)

To anyone ITT, - how come they don't have a process for invoicing multiple locations to a single address? You still have to have a receiver from them, have someone install the dish, etc... I must be missing something. I program distributed systems and SaaS applications and the whole model is based on being able to identity the device accessing the system and dealing with it accordingly. I'd have to imagine that if he's got x amount of receivers in one location and x amount in another they should be able to recognize it and handle the invoicing, etc... Requiring a separate account for each service address seems, to me anyway, to be more driven by the inability of the billing systems to handle it than any real world reason.

BTW not trying to be argumentative, just really don't get why a single account couldn't have multiple service locations. Our customers would go nuts if we required them to have a separate account for each location.

Thanks again all

This IS a sticky issue .... but it has nothing to do with the OP, other than he's using his landlords service, it shoulkd come down to his landlord.

NotBrad - you're confusing billing address and service address. Every installation has its own service address, which is the address where the equipment is located. But they can all have the same billing address, which is where the invoices go. The locals are determined by the service address.
