Here's a heads up on the protection plan changes that are coming.....

Well I now see everyone cancelling the protection plan as soon as problem is solved. Six months of $8 payments is $48 but it only costs $30 to cancel so you save $18,still not very smart on DISH's part.

It is smart. The net difference for customers that use the protection plan to get a cheap service call and cancel it right away is the same ($15 plus $25 cancellation versus $10 plus $30 cancellation), but Dish is banking on some customers forgetting to cancel, or others that just have the protection plan for the sake of having it, which will earn them more money. Those that are smart enough to use the system to their benefit are unaffected, yet those dumb or lazy enough not to, get penalized. I'm all for punishing the lazy and stupid. :)

Even if a person did that scenario twice it would still be cheaper than paying continuous for the year.

Agreed, though I would substitute "lazy and stupid" with" complacency".

Is there any benefit to having the protection plan on your account instead of adding it only when you want some sort of service?

Dish needs to add some value to the PP that rewards those who opt to continually pay each month. Otherwise, it is wise to work the system, especially if Dish really wants to keep an extra $8 per month coming in forever.

Too much of a hassle of having to add it and remove it.

As far as the pricing they are moving to the same model where they screwed everyone on the DVR fees.

Used to be $5/mo plus a $29 technician visit fee. Turns out people complained too much about the $29 and dish often waived it.

So now they jack up the rates $3 per month and charge $10 for a tech visit.

Same as the DVR. People refused to pay a one time $50 fee for a DVR with no monthly fees. So now we are on the free DVR with a $7 per month fee. That model seems to work better with people.

I look at the Protection Plan just like insurance. Monthly level payments versus spurts of service call fees.

I carried the Protection Plan until the last time I got Dish DNS. At that time my Protection Plan was terminated because my house has wheels on it and Dish Technicians will not take calls on it. Strange as the Dish Technicians have no problem doing installs on RVs.

Anyways the Protection Plan covers things besides service calls (none on an RV), like free shipment on purchases. At the time I went back and added up the fees that had been covered by the Protection Plan and compared that to what I had paid to the Protection Plan. It was about $20 difference over 6 years.

I began service with Dish in 1999. It seemed that the Protection Plan was promoted heavily in those days and everyone I knew had the plan. I don't remember the price. I think the downgrade fee was $5 just like any service but I can't say for certain.

Heck some can't figure out which remote....

Hey, you're describing me! Of course I had some really perverse "help" from my sis who couldn't find our main remote and stole the one from our MBR. Then, when she found the one from the main TV, she took that back into our bedroom.
