We moved into a new house and I decided to cancel the directv account in my name and start new service in my wife's name to take advantage of AAA new customer deal and new technology. They sent me the return receiver box for only one receiver. I just called and told them they only sent one box and instructions for one of the receivers and they said that is correct they don't want the HR22-100 back. I said "so to make it very clear I will not be charged for not returning it?" They re confirmed that I could throw it away if I wanted too. So what do I do with it now? I think I will hold on to it for a couple of months just to make sure I don't get charged.

Your mother went to college :) Just kidding love the avatar BTW, Any older equipment including the HR22 is no longer recoverable, with exception to the HR23's and possibly HR21's Older than those two I've mentioned are non returnable and can be recycled or used for parts, You just can't sell them.

So you could sell it, just the person buying it could only activate it if they already have service.

No, you could not sell it (assuming it is a leased box). It can only be reactivated on the same account.

If they are not wanting them back, would that not negate the leased status of the box? At that point, I would assume that I own it, otherwise they would send a box to return it. Just my thinking.

I just deactivated an HR20 a few weeks ago and they sent me an envelope to return the card.

Directv didn't want my HR23-700 back when the hard drive went bad. I replaced the hard drive & as soon as I get a SWM-16 multi-switch,I'm going to get it reactivated so I can have 4 DVR's(HR22-100,HR23-700,HR24-200,& HR24-500) along with my H24-700 & H25-500 receivers.

No, it's still leased as far as the DirecTV records are concerned.

Check the RID with DirecTV to see if the box is own or lease. If it is still listed as lease, keep the box. Or insist they they send you a recovery box.

You can only sell deactivated receivers that are on owned status, leased boxes can only be sold if they were never activated before from any account with a new unused access card, activated/deactivated leased boxes from a previous account can never be sold.

I've said it earlier in the thread, acostapimps has just repeated it; unless a deactivated receiver is "owned" (and that is pretty unlikely, people with "owned" receivers usually already know it) it CANNOT be activated on anyone elses account. So it can NEVER be sold to anyone. Unless you reactivate it on your account, it's just a doorstop...

Nope!

DirecTV change my HR21 to OWNED without telling me.

...so I can deactivate my HR-20 and H21 and not have to send them back? I've been holding off on deactivating them because I want to use them in guest rooms when we have family staying with us, but if I can keep them here and just reactivate when needed, that would be optimal...

No you probably can't do that, if they are leased. If you deactivate a receiver at your own request, you have to send it back to DirecTV, unless it is owned.
