Multiple tuners used to record back to back shows on same channel

So I am going to start with that I really like the Hopper and Joey setup, but I have one big complaint. Since I have had it (over 2.5 years) every time we have back to back recordings it takes 2 tuners to record for the 4 minutes while the recordings overlap. With all of the technology in the PTAT that records 4 channels at once on one tuner how is it that they can not make this work. I have called several times to advanced tech support and they agree that it is an issue but no one knows if they are even working on fixing the issue. Is there someone we can contact about this issue to let them know this is a big headache and get it in front of the development team to fix?

That has always bugged me also. DirecTV is able to do it. It might be a patent issue, I am sure it isn't that hard to program/code.

According to Matt on the main forum, this is by design, although a reason as to why is unavailable.

That sounds like a Dish answer, trying to spin it somehow to a good thing. It must be patent related, I will get an answer at Team Summit in May.

On my 612's if the setting is 1 minute past it will not use two tuners. I believe 2 minutes or more makes it use two.

Haha, "by design". This is something customers have complained about (I won't suggest that millions of Dish customers have) for a decade. Another way of saying it's "by design" is "because we don't want to".

Is it patent related ? I'd think that TiVo has the most patents related to DVRs and Dish has a license to those now. A poster above says TiVo can't do it either -- what DVR(s) can ?

I hate this "feature" as well.
I prefer this "feature" over the alternative of hard cuts that lose content. But yeah, there should be a technical way to record the overlap using one tuner and splicing the recorded overlap onto two recordings.

Direct does back to backs on the same tuner, so it is doable.

But one other thing about recordings that irritates is when it records a show on more than one tuner. I've seen that a few times, enough to notice it. Can't figure out why other than it seems it is occurring with PTAT channels on programs that I've set to 'save series' or whatever it is called. But I've seen rarer times when multiple copies of the same show on other channels are recorded.

Usually it is in groups of 3. One recording will be really short, another a bit longer and the 3rd full show length.

That's all it takes - the first show can still "end" 3-minutes late and the next show can still "start" 1-minute early. When you watch either, you will see either the beginning or end of the other as well. At worst, the first show may not be available (for how long ?) while it splices things together...

This is probably the biggest bug that annoys me most about the Hopper. DISH arrogance at not finding a solution is the second biggest.

Considering none of their receivers have done it, and they have claimed by design, I would be hesitant to call it a bug. As pointed out earlier, I am going to agree with the poster that said it is likely due to patent issues. It's like the 1:30 am update. It's by design, but people don't like it, and want to call it a bug, but it is not a bug.

The Hopper System is awesome, I wouldn't use this issue as a reason to trash them. They have built every feature under the sun into them, no one else even comes close. I am fairly certain it is a patent issue.

Well not every feature. Youtube would be awesome, but that is not something I am going to bash them over. Just a simple request every now and again.

Get a super Joey.

It's a shame that Dish won't invest in SWM Technology like Directv or the hopper wouldn't be so limited

While it would be nice if the Hopper system was a little more flexible, it would be just as nice and welcome if Direct spent some money on fixing the damned UI on what they have, and while they are at it they can fix channels I get which is not only not just the channels you get, but affects recordings.

What do you mean by fix the channels that you get? As in add more to their lineup?
