I am having an installer come to mount a Direct TV Ka/Ku Dish. I don't want him to mount it on my house roof (because it is shed style) and therefore am wanting to build a bracket that would substitute for a fascia board. I am looking for a PDF of the Direct TV satellite dish installer's guide. It is a 2" OD mount and I believe the footprint for the base 4 screws is 5" horizontal spacing and 7 7/8* vertical spacing. Thanks.

What does shed style mean?

A Ka/Ku dish cannot be mounted to fascia. If not on the roof we can do it on the side of wood siding, bolted into the underside of the eaves (not a clamp mount) a post in the ground or a non penetrating mount on a flat roof or other flat surface.

Are both sides of the roof a shed style? He may be able to do a pole mount, but there may be an extra charge.

could do an S-tube on a deck. as for the PDF, you'd probably have to find a number to a regional office and see if they would be willing to email it to you.

Jimbo thanks for the PDF of the manual. I am attaching 2 pictures of the bracket that I have built. (Note the Primestar Dishes on the other side of this room.) The heavy duty "L" brackets are spaced 8" apart. I will put some lumber across them (probably about 10" wide) to mount the DTV bracket which has a bolt footprint of 5" wide spacing by 7 7/8" vertical spacing. Since I have these brackets mounted under a small pitch roof rafters with iron bars the 90 degree vertical portion of the "L" bracket is not plum. I don't think this will be an issue though as the installer can correct this when adjusting the 2" mast to the DTV bracket (Coments/Correctons). Note that I have a long horizontal piece of angle iron attached to the top of the "L" bracket. I thought this could be used to attach monopoles if necessary. Does anyone know if its typical that monopoles are used in DTV installations...I have seen some in my neighborhood. I also don't know if this angle iron is positioned in the right place for monopoles. Also what stock of lumber (the 10" wide piece) would 3/4" be enough or should I maybe use two 2 by 4's(one for the top bolts; another for the bottom bolts)? The whole idea of this project is to avoid holes in flat shed roof. Thanks.

Monopoles are always used except in a pole mount or with the stubby mount. The monopoles are generally not in the same plane as the pole itself, so I'm not sure if the angle bracket will work or not. I'm guessing you don't want the dish on the roof because of how flat it is, but they may need to attach the monopoles there. If they do, they will seal the holes, so don't worry about potential leaks.

Attached are pictures of another option I have on the other side of the room. This pole is perfectly plumb...it is however 1 1/2" pipe with and OD of 1.9". We discussed earlier how to build this difference out.

With a pole that short, you may not need the monopoles. Ask the installer if you really need them.

not sure the dish will even clear the roof line. the older style azel was essentailly sitting on top of the mast, the newer ones sit lower down.

I have another pipe that is slightly longer that I can use. The mount is very solid...I have some Primestar 84e's next to this with this style of L bracket's and metal bars straddling the underside of the roof rafters. Thanks for the color on the azel position.

Ask the installer to bring an SLMTUER (Satellite Slimline Under Eave Rafter Mount) This is an approved DIRECTV Product available from DIRECTV's supply chain, and all DIRECTV distributors. It is designed to do what you are trying to do, and works quite well.

WOW...thanks for this PATECO. I got to thinking-I wonder if the fact that this Dish uses KA makes it more critical that the Dish be solid and that is why they frequently use monopoles.

Aiming is more critical, and the larger dish size makes it more susceptible to the wind.

I went down to the retailer showed the sales person the SLMTUER and he said that is not Direct TV hardware. Do you know if the retailer has to pay extra for this or does Direct TV just give away this hardware to the retailer like they do the Dish Mount. I found a link here http://www.installerparts.com/7866-directv-slimline-under-rafter-mountpack-of-2slearo-2.html. I also wonder if very many of the installers know if the SLMTUER even exists.

At any rate the salesperson wasn't very knowledgeable...he didn't even understand the monopole situation when I mentioned that to him. Looking around the neighborhood I see monopoles adjustable in length...the older ones appear to have a fixed length.

All of the monopoles I have seen are adjustable for length.

This retailer has no clue. It is directv hardware and is supplied to installers. Retailers have to buy ALL of their equipment so he may not want to get it because it is a specialty mount. I keep one of these on my van and I have another sitting in my garage right now.

There was never any fixed length monopoles except with the older international ODU. Monopoles are recommended but not supplied with this mount.

Being in the business as many years as I have been this is the first time seeing this type of mount.

Granted we don't have tile roofs here so that may be one of the reasons.

Retailers don't really care when it comes to stocking an item if they can make money, but the issue is this thing costs almost $70.

When your making $200 on a sale, $70 is something you just can't afford to give to the customer for free.

A retailer may choose not to carry this as it falls under the same policy as HDMI cables. I used to stock 6, 10, 15 and 25 foot cables.

I kept on buying the 25 foot cables but would never see them being sold on invoices.

Installers try selling them to the customer, customer would complain about the cost and we would give the extra long cables away for free.

Took away the longer cables from my installers, now everyone uses the 3 foot cords.

Just saved me a few hundred dollars per month.
