[Minnesota] Bye Bye Radio Disney in Minneapolis

Well its official. Radio Disney is gone in Minneapolis. Salem Media bought it a couple months ago and yesterday they moved the format of their Business Talk off of a weak signal (so weak at night that one time there was a MN gopher hockey game against North Dakota on it and The NoDak announcer said "the game is on a radio station in Minneapolis so weak that the signal gets out about 2 blocks at night")

Salem Media has moved the Business Talk format of KYCR/1570 (Golden Valley-Minneapolis) to KDIZ/1440 (Golden Valley-Minneapolis) after purchasing KDIZ from Radio Disney. The switch apparently happened on Wednesday (12/16). 1440 has a stronger signal than 1570, especially at night, though its nighttime signal lacks coverage of the northwest and southeast metro area. KYCR is reportedly running a looped announcement advising listeners to turn to 1440. Salem also owns Christian Talk station KKMS/980 (Richfield-Minneapolis) and Conservative Talk station WWTC/1280 (Minneapolis).

Disney AM 1690 in Denver is also gone. It was easy to get in New Mexico in the morning and I used to listen to it on the way to work when I lived out in the middle of nowhere.

Radio Disney really doesn't want listeners, do they? AM... HD subchannels? Not that I care, but no tweenies are going to fiddle with HD Radio or AM when they have their phones.

HD subchannels can go on analog translators too

But yeah almost all their affiliates were on AM

Yes, that was 1998-1999 when I would listen to Disney on the way to work in the morning. My other choices at that hour were mostly religion or Spanish. I became so fond of the Backstreet Boys hit "Larger than Life" that I bought the CD. The only kids I know now that even use a radio are my relatives on a remote ranch in Arizona.

yeah Beat Radio was a pirate station when it first started here in Minneapolis

Beat Radio originally was an unlicensed radio station in Minneapolis, Minnesota that played dance music. Founded by local radio DJ and programmer, Alan Freed, in 1996, the station served downtown Minneapolis and surrounding neighborhoods and reached into the western, northwestern and southwestern suburbs. The original station at 97.7 FM operated for 103 days until it was shut down by the Federal Communications Commission. Beat Radio subsequently moved to licensed stations and eventually became a nationwide radio network.
