The problem is, allowing everyone to try increases the chance that something bad happens. The goal is to keep it restricted so you can control it. I saw it, tried it, and said cool.

I won't mess with it again however, was just cool to check it out.

And don't PM me if you are going to ask how it was done, because I am not saying.

Even with the forced download, it still seems to me if the equipment was bricked, Dish would have to replace it, since the customer can continue to deny they know nothing about how the bad firmware got on the equipment. I would think that if Dish refused to replace defective equipment that the consumer would have recourse with their State's AG Consumer Protection office to help resolve.

How can this damage the Hooper? Does the corrupt GUI have some kind of Kryptonite in it that damages the hardware? Couldn't DISH send a hit to clean up the software and start over?
 
When the new guide is written to the eprom there is no way to go back. And as I posted before it has been reported that in some hardware configurations this test software may ignore the instructions for updating its software, meaning that build may be the only version the receiver ever downloads.

In addition it may cause issues with some Joeys. Luckily for those folks having Joey issues it seems it fixes itself overnight (based on the reports posted here to SatelliteGuys.)

There was a long process of writing to memory on the boot, after the download. Makes sense.
 
Some oddities. MY VHF signal strength went down slightly and MY UHF is up a tad. I might do a scan to see if I get anything new. I suspect though it is just that the scale is different not taht the tuner is any better or worse. Also the VHF signals appear at the bottom of the list now. No big deal but it scared me for a moment. Also I can check signal strength etc from the Joeys.

Well, I am not too computer literate. This info is way above my level. But anyway, thanks for the explanation. I can live with this Hopper 2 if it self destructs. :coco

So are you saying you reverted back to a previous version?
 
when my comes it comes i am not in a big hurry. guys keep up your experences on how you like or dislike the new UI.i;learn alot being on here with you i know sometimes i can be a pain in the butt i understand.
 
Count me in the beta group. I saw this thread when the instructions were here and thought I would try it. This was before it was posted what all could go wrong. Luckily everything seems to be working ok. I just hope that it didn't break my receiver from getting future updates.

No. One Hopper is on new still.

Had the wife check the old one, and it is still S528 so I had her pull the plug on it. I was planning on sending one back since I ordered my RAID 1 drive, so I will send in the one with the new UI.

2nd Hopper, and it did not prompt for a download

same thing for me and I don't think I am brave enough to force things
