DISH Comcast Dispute?

I base my "greedy" claims on profit margins. Typically (not always), the content owner conglomerate has profit margins 2-3 times higher than Dish's, or any MVPD. It's not hard to look up.

Comcast has many more sources of revenue then Dish, plain and simple-Universal Pictures, Theme Parks, cable channels, OTA Channels, NBC, Broadband, Cable TV Service, Home Phone, Security System.

You may not like them, but who can argue about their business success.

Dish could of used their money to expand beyond SAT. TV Service but instead wasted it on wireless spectrum they are just sitting on and at risk to losing it unless they ( or whoever buys or leases it from them ) start using it by a certain date, can't make profit from that until it is used.

Their success? They bought up a lot of companies. That'd be like saying AT&T has been successful in the Sat market merely because they bought Directv.

Right now we are in an odd position of Dish having rolled out a low cost cable alternative and renegotiating with a cable competitor for broadcast channels. This is clearly a conflict of interest and the whole reason we are supposed to have limits as to what companies can own what.

That's right, they bought a bunch of companies and made them more successful, Dish could of done the same, they could of bought Cable TV Channels or something else to expand their business, but all they have done is lease spectrum they are not using, failed lawsuits, failed mergers.

And yes I am a Comcast customer, but I would leave in a second if someone would offer me better service/ cheaper price, the only reason I still have Cable TV is because of the bundle discount I get with Extreme 150 Broadband.

Failed lawsuits? Their biggest one was verses Tivo and was an equipment issue. And Dish has the best equipment of all the companies. The spectrum, Ergen saw a bet. It isn't over yet. May pay off a little, may pay off a lot, may help make Dish a bigger player.

I do ponder how cable / fiber companies are allowed to fleece people for Internet and Phone in order to make it look like they are giving away Cable/ Fiber TV for nearly free.

I'm a former DISH sub, who left the company because it reminded me of being in an abusive romantic relationship. Considering that DISH seems to have these issues more often than any other provider, satellite or cable, and that the disputes seem more rancorous than those involving other providers, why do you all stay with DISH?

For me I've fiddled with Dish, Direct and Mediacom over the years but always seem to come back to Dish. Decent pricing, great hardware and a channel selection that works for me.

Direct has some good hardware but their software just is so old school and not very good old school IMO.

My TiVo worked fine with Mediacom but too many video/audio glitches that could have been fixed by them replacing the very old node in my neighborhood. Unfortunately for them, they didn't, I cancelled. Yeah it saved me a bit, just wasn't good enough.

I have a 2 TB external drive full of recordings, Dish has never called me to up my programming, gives me arbitrary discounts when asked for, has an awesome two room DVR at a price that is unbeatable without using Monopoly tactics.

I understand your comments regarding Dish and disputes, however in this particular situation, consumers would have had no ideal that a dispute was going on, if Comcast had adhered to the contract that both parties agreed to in 2013. Dish did not cause the stink in this case.

The main ones I know are TiVo-$500 million and AMC-$700 million.

I won't bring up what I pay since this is the Dish forum ( you can look it up by my name in the Comcast forum if you wish), but I am quite happy with it since it is only $16 dollars more then just broadband by itself, also no phone from them since we have Ooma now.

Neither of those were really a loss. If you look at the TIVO one, Dish did have to pay out, butnow can use all TIVO tech, which is why Dish has the best DVR on the market, including over TIVO. Also, AMC was over channels that were done for anyways, and they wanted $2.2B. Dish may not have walked away as successful as they wanted with that one, butAMC felt the hurt.

It would be even better if Dish were actually using that technology. When I got my 501, I was amazed at the silky smooth, fast, and reliable trick play. Then Dish took out the Tivo tech and it became jerky and unreliable as to how far back or forward you could skip. If the Tivo tech has been re-engineered back into the VIP (or Hopper) receivers, I see no evidence of it on my screen.

I think that had more to do with the MPEG2/MPEG4 encoding. My 625 was flawless in trick play, but as soon as I got the 722, I noticed the problems with trick play right away.

The 722 was possibly impacted by the TiVo lawsuit where Dish had to remove the code they supposedly "borrowed" from TiVo. In fact, many of us saw the change (downgrade) literally overnight. We had a 622 and one night it took a s/w update and people noticed a negative change in playback or FF/RW, pausing/resuming, etc.

I had a 625 before my 722, and I wouldn't call either of them, ever since I got them until today, "flawless". Did you ever see a 501 prior to the evisceration? No jerkiness, ever.

AMC sues Dish for $2.2 billion and they settle... Dish still lost because they still ended up paying. Oh, I see, but they only paid out $700 million, so yeah, consider that a "win" ;)
