My 2 year contract is up. Time to decide what next. I think I have a second generation Genie that doesn't do 4K.
I also have several of the older generation DVRs. If I stick with Directv what equipment upgrade if any should I ask for? Is something new coming out to compete with the Hopper 3?

I have 1 4K TV and plan on more before the end of a new contract. I checked I have a HR44.

Well, you got two choices.

Upgrade now to a HR54 that needs a C61 mini or wait for the second generation 4K Genie that hopefully can handle more than one 4K TV.

well dish has no 4k atm, so i would just wait to see how things work out
if dish starts launching 4k, then switch, if not and a new genie comes out, upgrade

Everyone has what is important to them so what I think may not be what you would. I would not be switching at this point and probably anytime soon just for 4K. At least for sometime to come you will likely get more 4K from streaming than a provider. If you are happy overall and cost is not the issue could be better to keep Driectv. You will be out of contract and if the right time comes to switch you can do so.

I ended up sticking with Directv with a 1 year contract at $50 off/month. When a new receiver comes out I will decide if I want to do a 2 year contract to get the new equipment.

Is the HR54 faster than the HR44? Any other benefits?

Similar performance. Maybe slightly faster but not significant. Other features is the power inserter is built in, few structural changes like modified casing, but not a whole lot of difference.
Mostly the SWM-7 so it can do transponder bonding for 4K programming.
