Two Hopper 3 problems...anyone else?

I just had our Hopper 3 installed four days ago, replacing two Hopper 2s. So far, I hate the remote, but that was easily fixed by synching the old remote back. I have two issues that I am wondering if anyone else has experienced, and I would like to know how can I fix the problems.

1) There is never a red LED showing on the front of the Hopper indicating that a recording is in progress. This is a real problem for our family.

2) The timers list will not maintain the priorites that I assign to recordings. Every time I go into the list, the priority numbers have been changed to different shows in the list. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to this, and it will certainly screw up my recordings if I cannot get it fixed.

I did not see my installer take this unit out of a box like he did the Joey. Is it possible that I got a refurb or someone else's reject from earlier in his service day?

1. Yep. No fix. Makes it less likely I'll EVER move to an H3. They might fix the OTA problems, but they ain't gonna add that LED to the H3.

So there isn't a red recording LED? They clearly show one on some pics I saw of the Hopper 3 somewhere. What a stupid decision on their part.

Unless you want 16 red LED lights I don't see what one light is going to tell you other than one tuner is recording. If you want to be sure something is recording you will need to look in any case most all the time. Even on the VIP just because the red light is on doesn't mean both programs are recording.

If you use the options button on the 52.0 remote control and then Tv activity , you will see all the tuners and or recordings going on at any time you want. The hopper 3 takes a little learning curve at first ,but after a few days you will get it. With every new tech ,comes innovation and with it a learning curve. You will adjust ... if you really want to. It comes second hand to me now to hit options for different things depending on what menu you are in.

I don't need to know what you are describing. I need that quick look function because I often need to do hard resets on the Hoppers. Looks like that will be needed more now. Anyway, I need to know before I reset if ANYTHING is currently recording, and I should not have to find the remote, and cycle through several button presses to make sure I am not about to interrupt a recording. I keep all my shows in folders, so the quickest way to see if something is recording is to go to the schedule, but that is a pain in the rear to have to do. The LED may not be important to you, but everyone uses their tech differently, and removing this particular feature makes no sense to me. By the same token, one could argue that a power on LED isn't necessary, since if you can see your shows then the Hopper is clearly on, however, I get that there are people who would really miss that light as well if it was removed. I will survive the loss of the recording light, but I do not really see this falling under the category of efficiency to me. When you design hardware, or software for that matter, it should be most easily used and accessible to a broad variety of people and their habits, needs, etc. Just my opinion though, and we all know what is said about those. ;)

I agree with you........it seems to me that the hopper is advanced in the # of tuners & suppose speed, it is also a step backward from the basics, with the recording LED being 1 example of that. I too used that to just glance & make sure that the system is recording when it should be. There are other things that have been mentioned by others, the remote, the lesser time frame for the guide...........just simple things that the common user likes. I too was going to switch, but not now, even though I have a 4k tv

1) If it's 52.0 I actually prefer it, if it's the new one then I understand.

2) you really don't have to cycle through a lot of buttons (not sure why you have to hard reset anyway but that's neither here nor there). If it's on press options then 1/select and that tells you if anything is recording.

3) you have 16 timers, you shouldn't have that much overlap ever. Hell on my busiest might I MAYBE have 4/5 recordings happening outside of PTAT.

Or hit DVR and look for the red light on the tiles......

Then there are the times when all you have is a black screen with no menus etc that button presses are NOT an option so a red light on front is NECESSARY.

In that case, you are probably not recording anything anyway. And if you are, you are probably recording a black screen. If have nothing but a black screen and can get no activity from button presses, your Hopper is having an issue and needs to be reset. This is not an everyday occurrence, or at least shouldn't be....

But it was recording just fine until I forgot that it was recording DUE TO NO RED RECORDING LIGHT and did a reset that could have waited

Personally, I have no problem with the issues mentioned. However it would be nice while doing a reset if a pop up would let you know if recordings were in progress before proceeding.

Well obviously the point is moot, since DISH has already made the decision to go with the hopper 3 without the led light from the start. Maybe when they come out with the hopper 4 -with 24 tuners- then they might reconsider the led light, that is if enough people complain about it. :smug

Or his TV might be turned off at the time he looks up, glances, to make sure that a program is recording.

I'm in the glance crowd that wants the red light.

I'm in the "who cares if there is a red light on front" crowd. I can't believe how much focus this one issue has had since the Hopper 3 came out. Whatever the reason's cited, I think it all boils down to "we're used to seeing it" versus anything else. This is just my opinion and I am frequently wrong, as my wife will point out...... It doesn't have the red light, it's not going to have the red light, how about just enjoying the equipment that is miles ahead of anything else out there? Change is difficult - I think it was M. Scott Peck that states that so well in his book "The Road Less Traveled".

Quite simply if it get complained about enough Echostar just might put it back if/when the H4 is released so I intend to complain about it every chance I get.

Those are the times that you get into the DVR from the menu screen using the buttons on the front of the Hopper. If still no response... SOL and very very very few would be affected ever.
