Not sure if this should be in the tech forum or not but here goes...feel free to move it if needed. Just need some insight on an idea I have for a townhome community where satellite dishes are not allowed. I currently have DirecTV and I would be forced to cancel my account when I move.

Now, I have heard stories of people being able to install their dish inside and in front of a window that faces south to get the signal. Has anyone tried this and it actually works? Basically trying to find out if it is possible to receive solid signal through a window. Thoughts and comments welcome :)

A townhome comunity can't just ban satellite dishes. If OTARD says you can have a dish, that overrides any local rules. Of course if there is nowhere on your property that meets the OTARD requirements , that's effectively a ban.
No you can't get signals through a window, replacing with plexiglass might make it possible.

read otard, you may be able to install one
There is so much legalese. The class act of a lady specifically said the owner of the townhome rental community wants the place to look nice and will not allow satellite dishes in any way shape or form. Now, how would I go about fighting this?

I would not attempt an install through a window.

I did it once, because the customer forced me into it after installing it outside their window. When I was done, I said never again. It was a pain to align, and the signal sucked when I was finished

If you have a patio or balcony, there is no a dam thing they can do to stop you. A satellite Dish is no worse than patio furniture or a BBQ grill.

I have set up Dishes thru a window before, Yes you can do that.
Mind you it was for a weekend deal, nothing permanent.

That said, there are dish covers, like rocks and other type of decorative stuff to disguise it in the yards if you look around some.

Can you not pole mount it or put it on a tripod? Would be no different than having your telescope out. Maybe they just don't want it mounted on the building.

If you have an area that is under your control, like a balcony or patio, you can put a dish there and the owner can't stop you, and if they try to do this you can talk to the FCC and they will issue a legally binding ruling.

Provided it's Not attached to the building they really have nothing to complain about ... other than the fact he was able to do something they didn't want.
