DISH we lost our OK CBS but give us the OTA programming guide info!!

So how well do you like the Tivo OTA? Do you have the one that does not cost a monthly fee for the guide? Anyone got any comments ont eh Channel master OTA.

I am getting tired of this yearly BS and looking at my options now...

There are dedicated threads for the TiVo Bolt, TiVo Roamio Basic, TiVo Roamio OTA and the channelmaster at AVS. Lots of info in them.

I have a TiVo OTA, so I would drop locals, but I also have the Welcome pack, so I would probably have to up to the Smart pack and then drop locals. I do not watch Dish locals at all.

I've owned a Tivo almost as long as I've had a satellite. Since the first 10Hr Tivo was introduced at CES!
When I changed to H3, I had a Tivo premiere in my Master. I've been paying $13/mo for years with Tivo; The OTA Tivo just came out, and when my current box died I was going to switch to it, or the Channel Master version.
It can do streaming services; but my internet is to slow to do much.
I loved my tivo, but at $13/mo for just OTA I think I paid to much for it (yea I could have done lifetime; but for me the life of a box is about equal to the same as the monthly payments) so I swapped it for a H3 & Joey. (now kinda wishing I still had it for these disputes; I wasn't thinking that the H3 didn't have an OTA option like my old box did)

It's easy to use, I think the new ones even have commercial skipper (mine didn't).
You might find a bargain on ebay; or Tivo's refurb bin (my last was a refurb, over 3yrs old when I sold it)

Tivo unlike DISH always gave out some really nice stuff at CES. The year after Tivo got the DVR settlement from CHARLIE they gave some nice bags out at that CES. I went by DISH had to show them off. Not sure Bruce P and the rest of them were too happy with me.

When NBC was shut off for the olympics, I had a 722(?) with dual ota tuner built in. The Sat channel was removed, but the OTA still worked & had guide info.

This time I have a H3 w/no OTA adapter (maybe Dish is dragging because of these 'negotiations'?)

So this brings up a question I was going to post; what can we ask Dish for for comp. during these blackouts, if anything? Now that I pay $10/mo for 'locals'.
Yes, that was the case when we lost KTLA 5 (a Tribune station). For weeks the OTA portion had no guide data (just the same not available as displayed in the Sat portion). But then, as if my magic, when it was clear that it would not be resolved soon, EPG data was populated on the OTA portion of the guide. I really don't know why Dish does not continue to provide EPG data for OTA users. I've heard rumors of extra cost or that Dish does not have the rights to the EPG metadata if Dish does not provide that station via LIL . . . I can't figure it out and have no clue why Dish won't continue to provide EPG metadata for OTA even if they don't provide the main channel via LIL. Unless Charlie himself or some other Dish Corp. officer fesses up, we'll probably never know why.

Folks while not a definite thing I heard at CES they are looking at making it so you can remove locals from your package if you don't want them. This is part of the reason why starting this month you will see locals as a separate charge on your bill.

And this may be an excellent way for some to save money, and have Dish less dependent on LIL. I can tell you that I rarely watch my LIL's, and I could do with a 2 tuner USB for my locals on Dish. Still others may need LIL because they can't get locals any other way. At least another option for some to save on the already sky high bill.

Why would you do something like that? My parents raised me better :). Well, Bruce P, et al. lives were probably miserable for that period. Meanwhile Charlie and Tom remained friends during and after the whole mess. Dish did get lifetime on all TiVo patents. Of course, this does not include any of the subsequent Rovi patents of the new TiVo Corp.

Yep, and that's the only answer to be had. No one knows, and probably never will.

Guide data for a channel is included in the contract for that channel. When there is no longer a contract then Dish can no longer freely provide that guide data.

However as was the case with Tribune they knew it was going to be a long fight so DISH opted to pay for the guide data for those with OTA access.
Who did Dish pay for the guide data ? You're suggesting they quickly negotiated a contract with Tribune for just the guide data. They can't pay (whoever provides guide data) because you said the guide data is part of the channel's contract - two separate entities.

HOPE i dont get KILLED on this one but why couldn't DISH provide TITANTV guide for teh missing locals to KEEP THEIR CUSTOMERS HAPPY. It might be impossible and COST DISH a few PENNYS.

I've been saying the same thing. Titan tv app is free to download. Let the hopper have that app and let the Internet do the rest. Then DISH would only have to do the local channel guide info for what they want, and Titan tv app would villain for sub channels and others we don't get guide info for from DISH?

Titan tv app is free to download.
It might be free for individual use, but who knows if there is a volume licencing fee to use it for a commercial purpose.

Again, no one knows why, and we probably never will.

I still say they want to disrupt the customer's experience as much as they can during a dispute. That just helps (in their mind) create animosity against the broadcaster. Remember, Dish is "looking out for their customers." ;)

I don't get how that makes any sense whatsoever. "Let's piss off the people that pay us when other options are available". Compared to a broadcaster going "let's piss off the rebroadcasters customers and tell them we are only asking what is fair and let them do the fighting for us". Whichnone makes more sense?

I don't understand how you're comparing the two honestly. Unless you're trying to claim the broadcasters are withholding the PSIP data. As I've said repeatedly, Dish HAS the PSIP data. It's in your receiver (providing you have OTA reception). Dish REFUSES to utilize it. The closest thing to a valid reason why not is they'd screw something up if they did. Broadcasters are operating within the law to make money for themselves. If they don't get retransmission fees, they lose out on money. If Dish doesn't use PSIP, they ???

YES give the CUSTOMERS OTA information. I could care less what information they put on the channels that are OFF.
