I see there is an update for 3.44 as of a few days ago that fixes several issues such as black screen. I used to be able to go to settings, diagnostics, updates and the play-play-recall and get it to force update. However I no longer have the update option. Is this gone for everyone in 3.43 or just me?

hopper 3 U3.44 2/16/2017
hopper 3 U3.41 1/26/2017
hopper 3 U3.40 1/19/2017

It was never meant to be there permanently. It was put into place to allow people who needed the CVAA (accessibility) to download it before it was sent to everyone. Those features had to be released by a certain date according to law, but there was still some bugs that they wanted to fix before sending to everyone.

It was on Settings/Tools. It was just an update option there that allowed a quick upgrade to 3.41 which added accessibility. However I used to be able to go to Diagnostics as well and then update and his play, record (or recall) play and it would force the latest update. Since the update option isn't there I can't do that anymore.

FWIW U344 downloaded to our H3 (which I installed/activated 2/17/17 PM) on 2/18/2017.2:30AM

This may be why the Black screen when trying to playback from the DVR went away.

344 here now,
ehd still black screen spin up state on first use. hit dvr, reselect and it works fine. like the past few versions.
repaired headphones, see if they stick, volume level still sounds much lower than 2 updates ago.

I received U344 on 2/23. I've been lucky in the past with updates, never any big issues. This update is the worst update I have ever received from Dish. I have tried a reset, unplugged, everything I can think of but I have unbearable slow speed at everything. Guide is slow. Rev/Fwd is slow. Sound drop outs. Black screens. Recordings in PT broke up into multiple pieces, some only 1 min long. One hour long show was in 7 pieces. The first hour of PT didn't even record. All timers disappeared. Tried to restore from remote and restore locked up. Had power off to restart the Hopper. Tried a restore again, this time it worked. I have never seen anything like this before. The system is almost unusable. Joey2 is working worse than my H3.

I received the update earlier this week and have had no problems. It looks like it fixed my issue of Netflix not displaying 4k movie in 4k for me. I have not had that issue at all since the update.

Just pointing out that the "disaster post" in not representative of the software update itself for virtually everyone else. There is something else going on.

Same here re: the EHD spin up black screen issue.

Also - for the last week or so it seems like I have to reboot (not reset) my H3 to get it to recognize my EHD. I can unplug and plug in the EHD to the H3, doesn't fix it (that used to be all it took to fix it when the H3 lost the EHD.) I can also unplug and plug in the EHD's power, and that does nothing. It requires a full reset of the H3 to get it to see my EHD, and this is now happening about once a day. This is the only bug I've had with the H3 that really, well, "bugs" me. ;)

You're not alone... I'm now aware of 3 Hopper3/4KJoey installations (including my own) having the same issues you've mentioned after receiving U344. I've been in extensive contact with Level-2 support at Dish and they are very much aware (and very much apologetic) about these problems. In their words - U344 is proving itself very unstable and in some cases outright destructive.

I too have seen the chopped-up recordings issue caused by U344 - that was a few days ago - but the problem will get worse... For example, today I lost the ability to create new timers of any type. Trying to do so yields the 1281 (Unable to create) message box, then shortly after you get the famous full black screen. Video comes back about a minute later. At this point if you go into DVR/Timers you'll see that no previous existing timers show and the Schedule page is also void. If the Hopper is left in this state none of the previously existing timers will function - the only way to get them back is to do a Power-Cord reset of the Hopper3.

And there's plenty of other functions & things that U344 eventually breaks on the Hopper3 as well - not right away - not all at once... You'll see... Once the anomaly's really get going on your Hopper3 (and they will,) I suggest contacting a Level-2 Dish CSR A.S.A.P. They know all about it. They tell me you could lose all functionality and a "fix" could be as much as 2 to 3 weeks away...

Posted too soon. The Black screen on DVR playback returned last night. I did a Red Button Reset to be able to view DVR recordings again.

I like the Hopper 3 but..... I've had to do 2 resets in the first week just to view DVR recordings. BTW that's 2 more resets than I did on our ViP 622 in the last half dozen years.

Why contact a Level-2 Dish CSR A.S.A.P.? As you have said, they know about it, but can't fix it for you...
