When DIRECTV NOW was first announced it was rumored that AT&T planned to move most, if not all, new subscribers over to the streaming service rather than the satellite service. At first that rumor was downplayed, but now AT&T has started to do just that.
Recently DIRECTV updated its satellite site and now prominently promotes its streaming service. Even the flyers for DIRECTV satellite now also include a promotion for DIRECTV NOW. (First seen on The TV Answer Man.)
Why is AT&T promoting DIRECTV NOW alongside the higher cost satellite service? The answer is a bit complicated.
It is true that DIRECTV NOW makes less per subscriber than the traditional satellite service; however, the startup costs are lower. There is no hardware to ship and no truck to roll out to the house to install a dish. So while the profit is smaller they become profitable more quickly.

They will run into bandwidth issues, plus Directv now is far behind PS vue and sling, they don't even have a cloud recording system.
They are going to completely replace UVerse with now soon because it would be less expensive.

Satellite will always be #1, just the technology is not there yet, only time this will have a chance is when everyone starts getting 100Mbps internet in their homes, that can easily be another 10-20 years because how slow these companies are expanding their infrastructure.

A quick answer to Why they are pushing D* Now .....

It's NEW ...

i wonder what percentage of current directv users have no access to internet, or even dont have at least 25mbs

An excelent point. It is important to remember that, still to this day, all forms of sat. TV are skewed more rural than society in general.

I looked at the site and don't get the sense that they are downplay DBS. The first option they show is for the satellite service, the second is the Now. They are marketing both under the DIRECTV umbrella so why wouldn't they show both services on that web site?

AT&T needs to saturate the market with their new product. It's not like they are telling people not to buy the satellite service. Everyone already knows that exists.

You have no internet of any kind available to you? No Verizon, no Comcast?
NO affordable, non or high data capped internet is probably a more accurate situation for those of us in rural areas. At ~3-4 gb/movie, the expensive 20 gig LTE or satellite data plans available to us don't go very far. The closest cable/fiber is miles away.

There is a rural service ATT 500GB WHPI /AT&T Unlimited Plus Multi Line or look at the ZTE Mobley Hotspot

My aunt and uncle who live in the sticks where even cell phone service is poor or non existence and were forced to drop Dish for DTV when they could not get a signal from Dish anymore.

If DirecTV does this they are done. DTVNow was the worst miserable experience I have ever wasted my money on. They don't even broadcast a bunch of channels in 720p. Also because of dumb licensed rules just because something is going over a bunch of computer networks they have to black out certain sports and this is the real kicker certain programs because some other network owns the rights, there is a has been actor or some overplayed one hit wonder song. It it goes over satellite or cable TV then they can show it but over the internet nope blacked out.

Blame Congress and the DMCA for the stupid internet restrictions.

Just because AT&T is pushing DTVN doesn't mean they want it to outsell the traditional DTV service. They want both to be successful, and I'll bet the traditional service is making them more money. I expect this is just trying to turn losing a customer into a retention, even if it is a less profitable service.

2 options
satellite internet
cell service

neither is viable for more than surfing a few web pages
as it is i use 60-80gb a month on my cell phone, if i started watching movies verizon would get a bit upset
