New date for forced CUI

Got the email back a week ago that they were going to force it on 6/27. Checked this a.m. and found nothing different? What time of the day are they forcing this update? I would have thought it would have been 2-3 a.m. this morning.

The email that I got said 06/29/17, so you might still have a couple of days.

Can't hurt.... In all seriousness though, I'm not sure that I've read any instances of the update causing a loss of recordings.

It's not the loss of recordings, it's the box getting hammered and not being able to get to or transfer after the fact. Plus one of our two HwS's is dying and I am hoping the update doesn't just fry it. Also I am reading many reports on how the update has ruined machine and they are not left in good shape. Just color me gun-shy.

AND I got the pop up again this morning saying that if I didn't update then, the update will be on the 29th. So as for the eMail saying the 27th . . .

My update was scheduled on 6/15 and it was updated overnight and ready to go the morning of 6/15.

A few quirks noted but both of my EHD's work and no major glitches as of yet.

I received an email notice that the update would happen on 6/27, but this morning a notice on the screen said the update will take place on 7/12.

Every 2 days or so I get a pop-up when I first turn on my HWS. It says that I can either download the new interface now, or wait until it will be automatically installed on 06-29-17. I have always selected not to install now. I want to put off the forced update as long as possible.

Why wait for the force installation. Do it when you want too, maybe the install will be better with no issues. I did both my HWSs install when there was nothing recording and unplugged all Joeys. Downloaded both HWSs at the same time. After they were both completely done I then plugged in one Joey at a time for their downloads. I did not have any issues and both HWSs EHDs worked as usual.

You are probably right, the update probably won't be as bad as I am expecting, but I thought the forced update would happen overnight when my HWS does its normal reboot. I didn't think that the update would come down while I was watching TV or recording something. I am in no hurry to get the new interface.

I held out a long time too. But, I don't like something like that forced to me. I have read many a post of members having issues. So I did the download the way fellow member Hall suggested by the above mentioned procedure in post #67. The new CUI is not all that bad and I like the way things are organized in the menus now. The only setting I miss is the timer Edit Event option. Also I miss you can't check the temps anymore. After I got use to the CUI and learned how to get around in it, about two weeks later upgraded to Hopper 3 system. It made the transition to the H3 a lot smoother for me. Good luck to you.

The space reported is strictly recordings (including PTAT, rentals, etc). The only way the new s/w would impact "your" space was if Dish re-sized the "user" partition (where recordings are kept) as part of the update and this is unlikely they would do. Too much risk of losing customer's recordings. Plus, they would only have to re-size it if the /system partition was too small.

WELL! got the HD yesterday and immediately from the way it was packaged for shipping I knew there would be problems. I tried several things and it was dead. So backup in case of catastrophe was not going to happen. At that point I was awash with a devil may care attitude. So about 2:30-3am I got bored and it hit me that I was null about this. If something happened, fine, if not, great. So I manually updated the HwS, the one that is failing, that I use and it went smoothly and was done in "less than 10 minutes". I looked around and am not entirely impressed. Off the top visually, the dark version is more gray than "dark". The medium gray text on medium dark gray backgrounds is going to be a problem. Although on the same pages there is lighter text. Why can't all be the same for the sake of proper visualization. Oh there's the UI designer in me. It should called GUI, Gray User Interface. And it is slow. You press a button and about the time one would think the attempt failed it would respond to the action. I'll let it sit a couple of days and see if it "livens up". I looked all around and it'll be a learning curve to get use to the changes. But there seems to be a lot that is still incomplete: No Blue Button Widgets; Future airings and suggestions there but severely lacking in content. But there are some really neat things that give me warm fuzzies that just need to be filled out/finished. With monumental relief, I realized that Grandma, the Rocket Scientist, will be able to settle into this with a minimal amount of damage to me.

SO I decided I'd update the box she uses with her there and walk her through it since we had plenty of time to do so. Went to the widget and started the update. It downloaded, then reset and . . . well it didn't install but redownloaded another time on its own then reset to install and we ended up on the sleep screen with no install. I tried it again and it downloaded, reset to install and didn't again. I did a soft button reset, since I was several floors above the unit and didn't want to walk all the way to it, Lazy, and tried one more time. It reset to start the DL, I got the new sleep screen that would lead me to believe that the install happened, but then it wouldn't even download now, reset again and ended up on the original sleep screen. Of all the issues I was dreading, this never crossed my mind. My main fear is that it would update easily with out my knowledge and leave us with a mess. I'll try it again tonight and see if the C(G)UI will install. I have yet to read anywhere where this has happened.

So this book is for those that try or get the update so that you don't get that "OH SH!T!" feeling at anytime during the process. Just go with the flow and all will be ok (lower case OK denoting a minor amount of comfort).

Sorry SandFarmer. I hope they calm down for you next several days.

Off the top visually, the dark version is more gray than "dark".
When I had the new interface on our Hopper 2, while it was still in "test" phase, they added a "Black" option or similar name. It was much nicer than the 'gray' option, in my opinion, and I wish they would bring it back at some point. It wasn't "complete" though and maybe priorities got shifted around so people weren't able to finish the rest of the UI.

Do you have Joeys attached to this 2nd Hopper ? If so, unplug them from the electric outlets. Confirm there are no recordings coming up either. It won't do the final installation step until the receiver goes into standby mode. If your TV is one, this is where you see the Dish "screensaver" normally. If there are recordings scheduled (don't know, in the next 30, 60, 120 minutes ??), it may hold off starting the installation. If anything, just turn the Hopper "off" with the power button on the remote. That doesn't turn it off, just puts it in standby mode anyway.
