I have been trying to rip some DVD's to put on my external hard drive. I all ready have a bunch of .avi movies on it. Most all of the .avi's work.

Fast forward to now and I am ripping DVD's with FeeMake to .avi, now when i install those movies on my USB external. They wont play like the other movies I have. My SatBox says unsupported. What gives guys???

How do you guys rip your movies?

Depends on the STB and the menu. What STB are you using and which menu?

To playback using the DVR function the file must be .ts format. To playback using the media player, the file type must be supported by the STB or installed app (addon) codec. A safe bet for file support by most STBs is a mpeg2.

Download and install a FREE software called: "Mediainfo".

Once it's installed, RIGHT-click one of the WORKING .avi files, and take note of the info it gives you about the format of the video and audio. Then do the same for the NON working files. I'm sure you will find a difference, and then you need to find out what exactly your player supports and create them with those parameters.

MediaInfo - Download

p.s. In case you don't know, audio/video files can have any number of wrappers, containers, audio and video streams and still have the same extension such as .AVI in this case.
