Taking Dish to my new home!

I've been with Dish for about 17 years at my NY home, and recently bought a home in Florida which will become my full time residence! The previous owner had Spectrum, and it was easier on a temporary basis to just continue with them. The mean time, I have my Dish account on pause, and selling my house in NY.

At this time, I've been using a VIP722, and haven't had a contract with them in many years! I looked into upgrading to the newer Hopper3 and 4K Joey, and was told that I would have to sign a new 2 year contract, and pay upfront $150 for the equipment! I've been paying for the protection plan for years and because of this, they would only charge me $10 instead of the $99 for the installation!

My question is, instead of upgrading the equipment, and sticking with the one VIP722, the only thing Dish would be doing is the installation, which I assume would still be the $10. Am I still going to be obligated to sign a new contract just for moving?

No new contract just for moving. I just moved a month ago, so I have recent experience to verify this.

I may have worded my question incorrectly. I do not have a contract now, and I'm trying to verify that by moving, that Dish will not require a new contract with the installation! Did you have a contract before you moved?
I also read on this site, that if I understand it correctly, that Dish is trying to get away from offering local channels via sat, and offering a roof TV antenna instead? That may be a problem for me in the community where my house is located.

Maybe you can mount an OTA antenna in the attic. Look in to how close you will be to the TV stations and how hard will it be to install it, might be possible. I mounted mine in the attic for my two story home located about 24 miles from the TV stations. I also have an amplifier in my OTA system. It wasn't easy but got the job done with 100% signal strength for most of the channels.

You will NOT incur a new contract for moving if you are out of contract. Dish Mover. Dish is NOT trying to get away from offering locals. They are giving you the option not to pay for it. They will always have to offer them for rural customers.

Here is a good site Charlym to see if an OTA antenna will work for you. TV stations location, what size antenna, etc.

Yes, I did, and moving did not extend the contract. It is still the same contract I had before, and it still expires at the same time it otherwise would have. (October 2018, for a two-year contract started in October 2016)

I apologize for my role in spreading that rumor, if you are referring to the thread that I am thinking about. There is rampant speculation about what Dish is planning, but nobody on here knows for sure. Dish is offering a free roof TV antenna in certain markets, but I have not seen a list of which markets are included in this offer.

You have been with them for 17 years. Why are you worried about signing a new contract? You are obviously pretty pleased and not wanting to changing providers. You also have some pretty dated equipment. It seems to me it would be easier and cheaper to just shut off the old account and start as a new customer getting the new customer pricing for equipment and discounted programming for a year at the new place.

I built my house 20 years ago, and it's located Upstate NY in a rural area. Cable was available at that time for TV only, and internet was tel line dial up! Cable was analog, and even though there were only standard def CRT tvs, the cable picture was really terrible, and I lived with it for almost 3 years. Finally, someone suggested Sat TV, and I looked into Dish. Dish, for the first year or so was not all fun and games. I received with my contract 2 Dishplayer 7200 DVRs. Every morning, when I turned the tv on to watch the news, before I could, I had to call customer service and waste an hour or more going through pulling the power cord, rebooting the DVR etc., until I learned all the tricks myself. Even when I did that, recordings were lost, cut in half, or the last 10 mins were chopped off. It was so bad that Dish had a class action lawsuit against them for the Dishplayers!
No, I wasn't pretty pleased, but it was still better then cable, and if I remember correctly, better then Direct TV at the time!
And of course, I was still stuck with a contract! I don't know how cable TV is there now, but I finally was able to get TW high speed internet several years later. Once I was off contract, I did everything possible to stay off, but said to myself, if I get tired of playing with DVRs to watch TV, I could always leave. I had one of the first HD DVRs, the 642 MPEG2 with VOOM. One of the first DVRs that didn't give me grief, but they went to MPEG4, and the VIP622. I went through at least 2 of those, and was given a VIP722 which is pretty reliable. But every time I have to start with new equipment, it's a new adventure!
Finally, for the new house, I want to get a UHD TV(after seeing a neighbors, watching YouTube 4K) and started to bring myself up to speed about what type of programming is available for it.
I was very disappointed to find out that Dish does not offer any of their own 4K channels, and that the Hopper3 is just a "smart" DVR, which offers a pass through of 3rd party streaming video services(Netflix, etc), which any modern smart TV can do!
This is my story, and I'm sticking to it! :biggrin

Thanks for this link!
I went into it yesterday and using my exact address, I was much surprised to find out that even though I'm slightly less then 30 miles from Tampa, I would get 0 channels without putting up a 30ft antenna, which I can't do. Another thing to consider!

Well, at least you are moving to great State. I visit realatives around Tampa and they have Verizon Fios.
Charlym, when I stayed at a home in this subdivision outside Tampa, they had a low end indoor OTA antenna. It was pulling in numerous TV stations from Tampa. Maybe when you get moved in you can try out a nice indoor antenna and see if you can pull in at least the prime time stations. If it works and if you have a big roomy attic you can install a gorilla size OTA antenna and pull in more stations with an amp.

With the Tampa area being flat, I can't imagine no rooftop reception 30 miles away.

I also can't imagine not getting OTA from Tampa, but that's what the Antenna Web said about my location! I'm pretty sure that the HOA will not allow external TV antennas. When I get the chance, I'll talk to some of my neighbors, and see what they do for TV, but I think Spectrum pretty much has the majority of the market in this area!
