Anyone Have Two Hopper 3s on a DPH42 Switch?

The installer showed up promptly within the scheduled timeframe (10:00 am). He was very friendly and cheerful. I've always found Dish installers to be this way. So a pleasant start to the morning.

Initially, when discussing the work order, he became a bit confused because I told him that he was installing two H3's. His work order said one. I explained to him that he was installing a leased one that he was to have brought and the one that I purchased, sitting on the floor in the kitchen. That was enough to get him to understand what he needed to do. No problem after that in terms of his understanding.

The installer had never installed two H3's. I asked him about the 42 switch and he said it wasn't necessary and that all he needed to do was get up on the roof and exchange my LNB for a duo hub. I questioned him on this and he assured me that it was all that was needed. I didn't arguer back because I don't have enough knowledge in this matter and I figured that if something went wrong, he'd fix it. He then went outside and climbed on the roof and proceeded to install the duo hub. He then came down, went into the basement, and connected all my wires together using what looked like a splitter. He then came upstairs and proceeded to hook up the two H3's. Unsurprisingly, it didn't work.

When the above process didn't work correctly, the installer called in to his offices and asked for help. Afterwards he came and apologized and said that I was right and that indeed the 42 switch was needed with the prior LNB that I had. So he went back to the roof, uninstalled the duo hub and reinstalled my prior LNB, went to the basement, and hooked up the 42. Everything went fine after that as expected. Likely about an hour of his time was wasted, but he did learn for subsequent installs and he was very contrite about not knowing how to do the hookup. It was no big deal to me as I was happy with his service overall.

The two H3's see each other and can access each other's shows. It's just like my H2 systems were before, except it's definitely faster.

Outstanding. Good news, I am glad you get her going. Yep, I love how the Hopper 3 is much faster than the HWS. Congrats to you.

Thanks. I'm really quite relieved at how few issues arose and how easily the ones that did were resolved.

It really is quite a nice upgrade from the prior H2's. I'd had the UI upgraded on the H2 units and it really slowed down the whole system. It's flying along nicely now.

There have been a couple of other threads with successful 2 H3 installations using the DPH42 switch. You just cannot get it through either a Dish CSR or the DIRT team. There was a Presidents # ( 866-213-5814) that is hit or miss in getting approval to do this type of installation. Then you have to buy the 2nd H3. Dish will not lease it to you. Then you have to hope that you can find some one with sufficient knowledge to install it and maintain it. I wanted to get it done to solve the 4K Joey Netflix and PIP problems. Now that the 4K Netflix problem has gone away. I am not sure the cost and bother for PIP is worth it.

I am interested in doing a 2 Hopper 3 install. The above number no longer seems to be in service. I tried doing a Chat with Dish Customer service and that was a dead end.
Has anybody been able to get 2 Hopper 3’s installed lately and if so what is the best way to get Dish to set up the install and activate the receivers? I know I would have to buy 1 of the Hopper 3s, but want to make sure they will do it before I go ahead and buy one.
If it matters, I don’t need 32 tuners, but I want to be able to have 2 active Dishanywhere connections at a time. I also have an 8X8 component matrix switcher, so I can distribute the receivers to any TV in my house. HDMI to component adapters from the Joey’s that I have now significantly downgrades the quality.
Thanks,
Chad

I would call and ask to talk to someone in the US and keep doing that until you get the right person. Another way would be Executive Customer Service which you can email by adding @dish.com to the end of it. (Don’t know if we’re allowed to post that email address directly any more. PM me if it’s not obvious enough)

Thanks for your advice. I was able to schedule an install for a 2 hopper 3 system. Dish tech came out today, but unfortunately my Dish is on the roof and we got a little snow and tech couldn’t go on roof. The installer left the 2nd Hopper 3 and a hybrid duo hub so the guy that has done my Home Automation system can come out an get on the roof when the snow is gone.
I want to have everything ready and I am not confident that the Dish Tech left everything I need for the install. He did leave the most important thing though, an activated 2nd Hopper 3!!!
I have a Dish 1000.2 with Hybrid triple LNB western arc. I have 4 wires up to the roof where the dish is, but only the one that goes to my current hybrid solo hub shows signal from the dish.
I will only have the 2 hopper 3s on the system when all said and done. Will I be able to use the Hybrid Triple LNB with this set up or will that have to be swapped out? Everything I have read in these forums says that I will need a DPP42 switch. Do I need that or will the hybrid duo hub take 2 feeds from the Hybrid triple LNB and feed to the 2 Hopper 3s like the Dish tech thought it would work?

You will need a non hybrid DPP LNB and a DPH42 switch. To let the 2 Hoppers see each other you'll also need to wire them thru the node as well.

So I will need to switch out the LNB and get a DPH42 switch. Can I have the DPH42 switch go to the hybrid duo hub to the 2 Hopper 3s or will I need to use 2 hybrid solo hubs like I have seen on the diagrams on the forum?
Should I call dish and see if they will send me the LNB and DPH42 or just buy it somewhere else? The installer left the equipment and it probably looks like he completed the install, so I wonder if he would get in trouble if I called and asked for the extra equipment.
Thanks,
Chad

I haven't personally used a duo hub with 2 Hopper 3's, I use 2 single hubs with the client ports connected as per DISH specs.

I don't know if DISH will provide you with the missing parts but if you call and they think the installation is complete the tech will get dinged, and probably rightfully so. Anybody installing for DISH at this point and still doesn't know how to hook up 2 Hopper 3's or at least look on the portal and find out how IMHO deserves to be dinged. :)

I had my second Hopper 3 installed a few weeks ago and, after 3 tech visits, they see each other's recordings. My one minor complaint is that when I go to TV activity, they do not see each other, so I cannot pause in one room and resume in another room. Is this the same as other people's results?

Yes it's the same. They aren't designed to share tuners, just recordings.

There are Dish techs that don’t know how to relocate an antenna on a VIP dual tuner, or know enough to go through all the settings on the Hoppers, so don’t be surprised

A ding takes a lot of pay from someone that may be starting out and doesn't know yet... just because they are installing doesn't mean they were trained completely yet. The job of installing is a revolving door that keeps pushing out experience in place of cheaper faster labor.
Most of the installers now don't even work directly for Dish but a regional crap provider that takes even more money from the tech when ever they can.
So think about that before you feel someone deserves to have their pay reduced not just for one job but for MONTHS of jobs after that.

The company shouldn’t send partiality trained people out on their own.
