Dish boycotts Fox News Go

For whatever crazy reason, Dish Network is the ONLY cable/sat provider that won't authorize the Fox News Now Internet application so that we can watch Fox News and FBN networks online. This is petty and mean of Charlie Ergen, who has some kind of feud going with Rupert Murdoch.

Enough is enough, give us the service that we are already paying for, and please authorize Fox News Go for Dish customers. This message is aimed at the suits and execs at Dish

I hope it's not too soon. IIRC the last time the contract was up for renewal FOX News was off DISH for quite a while during negotiations.

Exactly. It's all about what both sides agree to. This isn't new for Dish. They tend to wait for negoations to then add the "Go", "Now", and anything similar apps.

Have you seen a copy of the contract? Every other provider authorizes Fox News Go, except Dish. Fox doesn't charge anything extra for that customer benefit.

Mitch, it's part of he contract. All others who have Fox News Go were at the end of their contract and signed new ones or renegotiated a new one which included Fox News Go.

DISH normally does not negotiate contracts especially long term ones as it would mean higher costs.

I have asked about this before while meeting with DISH and trust me they would like Fox News Go as well as have FOX News properties on their Sling TV service.

Spectrum is listed on the Fox News Go website as being authorized. Dish is not.

You can contact Spectrum and find out what the problem is, but it should work.

I have a Roku, and often I have tried to authorize a new Roku channel that needs cable/satellite as your provider, and a few channels, Dish is not listed so I cannot get the on demand channel. According to Dish, the programmer may or may not okay all providers. As others have said, it all comes down to contracts. Most I have but not all.sometimes wait a bit and more providers are listed.

As Scott said, it needs to be an agreement, in writing, between both sides. Dish tends to wait until new contracts to then add access to the apps. It's not that Dish just doesn't want their customers to not have access. Dish is a business, and will rather keep its paying customers happy with access to all content for which they are willing to pay, in most cases. The story is different for sports fans in NYC, Celtics fans in Boston, and any other market where Dish dropped an existing RSN.

Well, let’s consider this. Let’s say Dish has a dispute with X. X plays hardball and tells its viewers to go to DirecTV or cable. Tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands, do just that.

Why would Dish negotiate then? Those subs are gone. The bleeding is OVER. Those subs are not going to be coming back soon, if ever. Probably a year or two before they’d even consider a return. Dish might as well save the money and drop X completely. And in any future contract, try to ensure there can be no such hardball again (I doubt that’s legal). Because after 1-2 years of getting nothing, less than nothing after considering reduced ad revenue, X might be easier to deal with.

It could be “we want $1.50 per sub per month and you can have this feature, or $1.25 per month without the extra fluff”. Truth is, you have no idea how much they charge providers and what the deals are. Dish has an Ace card in the sense that they have Dish Anywhere, so you can have live FNC and FBC, and that actually doesn’t cost anything extra. You are getting what you pay for, as you pay for the linear channels... you are not entitled to any of the apps. They come as a courtesy.

I know that Fox News doesn't charge extra for the Fox News Go service because I can't find one other cable/sat company that blocks the application besides Dish. It is a free add on for the benefit of subscribers. Fox gets to show all of its ads during the Internet broadcasts, while when you watch it on Dish you will occasionally have to watch a Dish ad, which is a small bit of revenue for Dish.
