So the Dish technician is at our house at the moment and "there are problems." (I'm at work so I'm hearing this all from the person at home). We're getting a Hopper and 3 Joeys. Apparently the TV in my bedroom is "incompatible." Why? It's an older, small tube TV. I tried looking up TV compatible with the Hopper/Joey system but haven't found what I'm looking for yet. I know the picture would be in SD but that's fine and it says so on the website. So apparently the tech is bringing this piece of crap even older TV into my bedroom instead. Why does the older PoC TV work better than the newer slightly less PoC TV? Has anyone encountered this?

And he's also telling my mom she'll need to buy cables for $40 for some of the TVs. Just. What!? I feel like Dish should eat that cost but maybe I'm just a little too frustrated with Dish right now.

Does any of this sound right?

Your problem is lacking some details so I'll guess at problems. The incompatible TV is so old and cheap that it only has CH.3/4 coaxial input instead of component/composite RCA inputs.. The Joey does not have coaxial outputs to connect to that TV. An optional modulator is required to connect it.

That all sounds possible. I just am so stressed over this whole thing (it's weeks in the making now). I still don't think we should have to pay for extra cords though. I think Dish should expect that some people have older systems somewhere in the house.

Why should Dish eat an unexpected expense that few people will need? Old CRTs are rather uncommon now.

The vast majority of old CRT's have audio/video inputs and work fine. It's the few that don't have audio/video and only have a coax connector that need a modulator.

And the $40 cables sound like the tech might be trying to sell some upgraded HDMI wires which you DO NOT need. The HDMI wires that come with the receivers work great.

The Hopper and Joeys come with HDMI cables that will work just fine on your HDMI compatible TVs. There is no need to purchase those $40 cables.
Provided those TV's have HDMI connections. I've got 2 old HDTVs that are component only takes 5 cables to use them, but they still work.

According to Benton.org 81% of US households have HDTVs, and 53% have multiple HDTVs. Undated. LRG twelfth annual survey, HDTV XII.

AH! They link to a 3/13/15 article claiming those figures. So it must be higher today.

But yes, people hoard the old CRTs. I have two large ones that I don’t want to move. But learned 1800GOTJUNK will take them. For a price.

When my MiL passes, and we inherit the two HDTVs I bought for her, I’ll have to finally get rid of them.

The $40 HDMI cable of by audioquest/pearl wouldn't be needed but it would be an enhancement if customer has ultra hd tv with a sound system/sound bar system. The Pearl does transfer the true Dolby digital sound, read specs.

Yea right. That sounds like the 'marketing' pitch that Dish techs use to try and hawk their wares. I really feel bad for a 'tech' that's also expected to push HDMI wires that people don't need, over priced screen cleaner and the rest of the SHS 'products and services'.

Let me guess, you're one of those 'techs'.

And by the way, the stock HDMI wire works great here for 4K UHD and all the flavors of Dolby Digital.

Dammit. I just got home and there is a Pearl HDMI box laying around. And a $119 charge. We do not have 4K TVs. We have every day Vizios. I am pretty pissed that they added a $119 charge to this upgrade that we weren't expecting for cables that we don't need. Dish will be hearing from me.

I can’t believe HDMI cables cost that much. I’d definitely make my thoughts known to Dish if they charged me that much.
