Ok, some may call it a downgrade, but I was planning on retiring my ViP722K (and myself) and hitting the road in my RV with a shiny new Wally on my account. I’ve had the 722K since 2010 and so have “several” movies on my external hard drive that I would like to watch on the Wally. The Dish CSR seem to be at odds on whether I can watch my recordings from my ViP722K (DVR model) on a Wally (non-DVR model). Originally CSR said it would work as long as they are on the same account (they will be) so I ordered a Wally with a 2TB EHD. Then a CSR told me that "You can only swap the external hard drive between like receivers (DVR model to DVR model) or (non-DVR model to non-DVR model) on the same account without losing DVR recordings." It’s even on the Dish web site. Is there a way to do this, or should I just keep the 722k until it dies?

This CSR was correct. If you would like to keep watching the recordings from the 722k, you could use a Hopper Duo. In some ways, I find the Hopper Duo to be better for RV use than a Wally anyway, depending on what features you want.

I was trying to trade for the One-Time $40 Hard Drive fee instead of that pesky reoccurring $15 Hard Drive fee (that use to be half of that) and I assume it's gonna keep going up. I certainly don't need to watch two channels at the same time, although the 722K, TiVo, Blu-ray and iPad all feed into a HDMI Matrix Switch that feeds signal to all the TVs.

If I went for a Hopper it would be for the DISH Hopper With Sling (basically equal to what I have and the Hopper 3 isn't compatible with my Wineguard Traveler antenna). My TiVo has no service fee and a great OTA tuner (67 Channels vs 22 Channels on the 722k) as well a 5TB hard drive loaded with recordings that works in the woods when the 722k is a brick. The the iPad has unlimited data for Netflix and Prime.

NO!

Let me rephrase that:

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! A THOUSAND TIMES NO!

Too many problems with the HWS today, even if you only have one. If you can’t get the H3 to work with your antenna, you might want to consider another antenna.

My family uses 2 HWS's and they haven't complained about anything other than the Hopper to Hopper trick play problem, which I've heard is being worked on. What other problems are you referring to?

Currently, the best way to use a Hopper 3 with a Winegard Travler is to use DISH’s new DPH42 switch. But the real question is why is the DVR service fee for the Hopper Duo $10 a month and the DVR service fee for the ViP722k is $15?

My MBR HWS is failing. Also, it is very slow, due to s/w changes. So slow, you may press buttons too quickly and get an unexpected result. This will never be fixed. Features have been stripped from the HWS and who knows what more may be done to limit their utility. No good reason to go with old equipment that will have used baggage with it.

The software in the HWS and the H3 is virtually identical. A properly working HWS isn't that bad and is faster than a DirecTV Genie HR34 or even an HR44. I agree that it's always best to get the latest and greatest in equipment but unless you're extremely well qualified a Hopper 3 isn't free for a new customer. The Hopper 2 is still a very nice receiver.

Probably because the 722K has the capability to support a second TV and/or home distribution.

Agreed. You don't need 16 tuners in an RV anyway. HWS is only a little more slightly slower than a Hopper 3, mostly noticeable in moving the guide page by page

Someone moving from a ViP722 series to a HWS aka Hopper 2 will notice slower operation. I expect for most it will be aggravating. Why make a commitment to something you may be stuck with and frustrated with?

You think a Hopper is SLOWER than a VIP? I don't think I've ever noticed that, other than slow response to the remote sometimes on the VIP

I disagree. My HWSes are slower in almost ALL regards. Heck, you even have to wait for the proper info screen to appear when moving thru programs.

I don’t have a H3. But all reports I’ve read here indicate NO delays in any H3 operations. You CERTAINLY have delays across the board with the HWS. I have grown to accept the delays, in order to keep redundancy. But just barely. I’m close to the end on that. And that’s why I am infuriated that the remaining utility of having two HWSes is now gone- no reasonable viewing of the other HWS’s recordings. So I’m down to just the redundancy value, and even that is limited because of the second HWS slowly failing. I don’t dare even record much on it. All this pushes me to consider FiOS.

I had a couple ViP722s years ago. Never a delay. I moved to the Hoppers for the extra tuners and other features- including the rollover of recordings to Hopper #2 when the tuners on Hopper #1 were all in use.

Tell me, what happened to that tuner rollover? Did we lose it because we gained some other features? Pray tell, what such features?

I’d HATE to see someone go with something they may well regret. And be stuck with.

None I need. I was just telling my manager today how stupid it is to put YouTube on there and soon Google Home when they can't - as in not able, (or won't) fix the things that are broken
