It's that time of year again, upcoming price changes.

It occurs to me that with the new price structure for Welcome Pack, Dish is discouraging customers from temporarily upgrading for sports or other programming, and then dropping back down to Welcome Pack. Instead, it seems that Dish wants to encourage Welcome Pack subscribers to keep that package full-time. I wonder why.

I add sports or other programming for a single day and then drop it for a net cost of 0.00. :)

I'm hoping more people would gravitate toward the flex pack as that could be the start of more flexible ala-carte TV.

And I am hoping that those same flexible Channel Pack options will be made available to Welcome Pack subscribers, so we can do the same thing without having to upgrade our programming package.

They need more channel packs. 1 with Smithsonian and science would get my attention.

Charter has Spectrum Basic for $24 + $10 with the stupid Broadcast TV fee for $34 total. It includes all local and local digital subchannels, the three C-SPANs, their own Spectrum News, QVC, HSN, Evine, Jewelry TV, Public/Community Access channels and all of the Music Choice channels. The profit margin must be insane on this. The shopping channels pay for coverage, Charter is part owner of Music Choice and the C-SPANs are free. A package like that should not cost over $30/month.

That is a crazy price for just that much TV. I agree, their profit margin must be nearly free and clear, other than a bit for broadcast tv.

dish america has smithsonian but not science channel.
and i dunno if u can get dish america anymore.
....
I think Dish America is in the same category as Smart Pack and Welcome Pack: you have to call to ask for it. Those packages are not available through the website, and brand-new customers cannot start an account with any of those packages.

Received my bill this morning. There was a notice at the bottom that reads:

"Effective 1/15/19, the price for customers who subscribe to Welcome pack before that date will be $25.99 per month. The price for anyone who newly subscribes to Welcome Pack on or after 1/15/19 will be $29.99 per month. This includes customer that change from Welcome Pack, go into non-pay disconnect, or pause their account and then subsequently re-subscribe to Welcome Pack."

There are going to be some pissed off late payers. When they find out they lose grandfathered pricing due to a non pay soft disco.

Looks like they are trying to make the Welcome pack go away with the price increase to $29.99 a month. For just $34.99 you can get Flex pack with most of the channels people watch, minus sports of course.
I have to disagree. With the grandfathered price of $25.99 per month, it seems like Dish is trying to encourage subscribers to keep Welcome Pack long-term, rather than switch packages. Maybe those sports and other add-ons will be made available to Welcome Pack subscribers, to help them keep the same basic package year-round. Oh, and by the way, Flex Pack will be $37.99 per month when the new $29.99 per month price for Welcome Pack takes effect.

Exactly the customers DISH has said they are not going after. Pay on time we will give you discounts, price cuts, price freezes etc.
Think of it as a built-in autopay discount for existing Welcome Pack subscribers. Sign up for autopay, and never worry about late payments or losing your grandfathered price. In the past, Welcome Pack has never qualified for the $5 per month credit (or any other discount) for using autopay that other packages were eligible for. Perhaps this is Dish's way of making up for that injustice, to the existing Welcome Pack subscribers who missed out on the autopay discount when everyone else was getting the discount.

And Locals, if you need them from Dish. That is another $12, plus the Flex Pack will be $37.99 after the price bump. Now, I am not saying the Flex Pack isn't good value, but you are paying significantly more to get those extra channels.
